SPORTS CAMP/CLINIC PROGRAM
Sports camps and clinics are offered for the purpose of providing non-credit offerings in activities related to competitive sports. The camps and clinics are organized to provide opportunities to learn skills and strategies and to provide competitive experiences to individuals with unusual or above average interest, potential and/or ability. The following sports are considered a part of the sports camp and clinic program at UNLV:
Basketball (Men's) Baseball
Basketball (Women's) Soccer (Men's)
Football Soccer (Women's)
Swimming Softball
Volleyball Tennis (Men's)
Track & Field Tennis (Women's)
DEFINITIONS
1) A UNLV sports camp or instructional clinic is any camp or clinic that is owned or operated by UNLV or an employee of the UNLV Athletic Department, either on or off its campus, and in which prospective student -athletes participate. (NCAA Bylaw 13.13.1.1)
2) A diversified sports camp is a camp that offers a balanced camping experience, including participation in seasonal summer sports and recreational activities, without emphasis on instruction, practice or competition in any particular sport. (NCAA Bylaw 13.02.1.1)
3) A specialized sports camp is a camp that places special emphasis on a particular sport or sports and provides specialized instruction in the sports(s). (NCAA Bylaw 13.02.1.2)
4) A prospective student-athlete ("Prospect") is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a pro-spective student-athlete if the institution provides such a individual (or the individual's relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students generally. (NCAA Bylaw 13.02.9)
PURPOSE
A UNLV sports camp or clinic is on that (NCAA Bylaw 13.13.1.1.1):
1) Places a special emphasis on a particular sport or sports an provides specialized instruction, Practice, or competition.
2) Involves activities designed to improve overall skills and general knowledge in the sport, or
3) Offers a diversified experience without emphasis on instruction, practice or competition in any particular sport.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Mike Hamrick, Director of Athletics
*Final approval with the sports camp/clinic manual.
Jerry Koloskie, Sr. Associate Director of Athletics/Sports Medicine
*Supervises all Athletic Training Department responsibilities.
*Implements Summer Camp Medical Profile.
*Gives final approval for Football and Men's Basketball Camps/Clinics.
*Oversees the development of the Camps/Clinics Manual.
Lisa Kelleher, Associate Director of Athletics/Olympic Sports
*Gives final approval for Olympic Sports Camps/Clinic.
Eric Toliver, Associate Athletic Director/Compliance & Student Services
*Implements educational and procedural efforts to significantly reduce the risk of potential NCAA violations involved with the conduct and administration of sports camps and Clinics.
*Monitors the sports camps and clinics for NCAA bylaws compliance.
*Reviews all advertising, literature and brochures related to the sports camp or clinic.
Wendy Meyers, Associate Athletic Director of Finance
*Account for all sports camp or clinic funds (revenues and expenditures).
Rob Nelson, Director- Game Operations and Facilities
*Assist with reserving the Thomas & Mack Center.
Mack Hayes, Facilities Supervisor/McDermott Physical Education Building
*Coordinates scheduling of the McDermott Physical Education building.
Karen Strong, Coordinator/Residential Life
*Supervises and coordinates on-campus housing. (Ext. 4211)
Aaron Neilson, Manager/Dining Commons
*Supervises and coordinates meals at the University Dining Commons. (Ext. 3166)
