Oh, Moore Awards

July 17, 2003

LAS VEGAS - UNLV golf All-Americans Sunny Oh and Ryan Moore were chosen the schools' Sportswoman and Olympic Sportsman of the Year, respectively, by the UNLV Women's Sports Foundation on Thursday.

Oh, a freshman last season, led the women's golf team to its first-ever team victory and first postseason appearance. The Seoul, Korea, native took her own championship dreams a step further by advancing as an individual to the NCAA Finals after winning the NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz. During the course of the year, she broke the school records for low round (67) and low tournament (211). The Mountain West Conference Golfer of the Month in October was awarded the league's Freshman of the Year award and was a first-team All-MWC selection. Her 11th-place finish nationally earned her honorable mention All-American status.

Moore, a sophomore from Puyallup, Wash., earns UNLV's Olympic Sportsman of the Year title for the second straight season. He shared the award with tennis star Thomas Schneiter last season and is the sole recipient this year. The Rebels' star earned All-America kudos for the second straight year and won his first collegiate tournament, the Toyota Men's Collegiate Championship in Las Vegas. He was a finalist for the prestigious Hogan Award, which is presented annually to the top player in college men's golf. Moore also participated on the U.S. Palmer Cup team and was a first-team All-MWC honoree.

"We are very proud of both of these athletes," UNLV Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator Lisa Kelleher said. "They are both underclassmen, and that promises a bright future for both of these programs."
