Four UNLV athletic programs were recipients of UNLV Athletics' team academic awards for the 2000-01 academic year Wednesday.
The men's tennis, baseball, softball and women's swimming and diving programs were all honored at the UNLV Athletic Department Presidential Welcome Breakfast at the Lied Athletic Complex. The awards recognized the achievements of teams with the highest grade point averages and most improved GPA's from the prior year.
The women's swimming and diving team was the most improved women's team as it went from a 2.93 overall GPA in 1999-00 to 3.031 in 2000-01, while the baseball team won the men's award, improving from 2.44 to 2.879.
The highest women's team GPA award went to softball (which is the largest squad by participants to ever claim the award) with a fall GPA of 3.352, a spring GPA of 3.307 and an overall GPA of 3.309 for the 2000-01 year.
Men's tennis earned the highest men's team GPA with 3.117 in the fall, 3.288 in the spring and 3.214 for the year.
The awards were presented to the head coaches of the respective sports by UNLV President Carol C. Harter, Athletics Director Charles Cavagnaro and Betsy Reed, Director of NCAA Academic Services.
