October 19, 1998
The Tenth Annual President's Tea was held on the campus of UNLV on Sunday, October 4. In what
has now become tradition, the tea takes place in honor and acknowledgment of UNLV's female
student-athletes. Co-sponsored by President Carol C. Harter and the UNLV Women's Sports
Foundation, this year's program took place in the Richard Tam Alumni Center and was
highlighted by the presentation of the 1998 Sportswoman of the Year Award by Assistant
Athletic Director Lisa Kelleher. This year's recipient was two-time All-American softball
player Julie Crandall, who was in attendance to accept the award and speak to the current student-athletes and her former peers in attendance. Crandall graduated with a degree in communications last May and is currently serving as an assistant softball coach at Auburn University.
The program also included the introduction of the 1998-99 UNLV women's teams along with the
newest members in the sports of rodeo, track and field/cross country, softball, swimming and
diving, volleyball, basketball, tennis and soccer.
The Women's Sports Foundation, chaired by Carolyn Sparks, serves as a support group for the
deserving female student-athletes at UNLV by supporting and funding such programs as the
letterwinner awards, annual awards banquet, and fundraising efforts for fifth-year
scholarships.
