Women's Sports Foundation Presents Golf Fundraiser

Nov. 9, 1999

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Women?s Sports Foundation and the Executive Women?s Golf Association will present ?Fore,? a UNLV Women?s Golf Fundraiser on Thursday, November 11 at 4:00 p.m. at the Desert Inn Country Club, the athletics department announced Tuesday.

UNLV is examining the possibility of establishing a varsity women?s golf team, and the fundraiser will serve to create both awareness and support for the program.

?In continuing its commitment to gender equity, the athletics department has considered adding various sports,? said UNLV Associate Athletics Director Lisa Kelleher, who oversees UNLV?s Women?s Sports Foundation. ?Recent research has shown that the community would like to see a women?s golf program at UNLV.?

The event will include a gourmet reception, silent auction and fantasy putting with celebrities, LPGA stars and LPGA Hall of Fame members. Registration is $30 per person or $100 per foursome, and reservations can be made to Paula Darino with Consultants in Marketing at 944-2464.

If added, women?s golf would be the third new women?s varsity athletic program added to the department since 1996. Women?s volleyball was brought back to the university in 1996, and a women?s soccer program began competition in 1998.

?This is a great opportunity toward starting a new program and getting the community to embrace the concept and help with funding issues,? Kelleher said.

The Women?s Sports Foundation, now in its 10th year, is dedicated to enhancing the total educational experience of the female student-athlete. The group helps promote the academic and athletic accomplishments of UNLV women?s varsity athletics programs through both community and campus support.
