All-WAC Receiver Williams Ties UNLV Record
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Damon Williams, who last week was named
First-Team All-Western Athletic Conference for the first time, will head
into his senior season in 1998 as the school's all-time pass receptions
leader with 156.
With his four catches to close the year vs. San Jose State on Nov. 22,
Williams finished this fall tied for first with current Pittsburgh Steeler
Henry Bailey, who also had 156 grabs from 1991-94.
Williams, who finished second in the WAC in receptions with 5.6 per
game (25th nationally) should become the team's sole Catch King on Sept. 5,
1998, at Northwestern. His first catch that day also will extend his
school-record streak of catching at least one pass to 35 games - or every
game of his career.
Early this past season, Williams became only the fourth Rebel in
history to pass 2,000 yards in career receiving yards and the former high
school quarterback needs just five yards next year to move into third on
the all-time list and jump past current Jacksonville Jaguar star Keenan
McCardell.
Fellow-true-junior Carlos Baker is right behind his teammate Williams
in the records chase. Baker is in 6th place with 140 career catches and his
1,900 yards are good enough for 5th all-time. Also, Baker's 71 receptions
in 1996 broke the UNLV sophomore record of 54 by Demond Thompkins in 1992
after Williams had set the freshman record in '95 (later broken by Len
Ware).
