Top-seeded Waves advance with 5-0 whitewash.
May 15, 1998
LAS VEGAS - Top-seeded Pepperdine had little trouble with Fresno State and advanced with a 5-0 whitewash in the first round of the NCAA women's tennis regional on the campus of UNLV Friday.
The 12th-ranked Waves improved to 20-5 overall while the 39th-ranked Bulldogs finished the year at 16-12.
"I thought we played well but obviously I'm not happy with the outcome," Fresno State Head Coach Irene Harris said. "Pepperdine just played better and deserved to win today."
Pepperdine got quick wins from Zsofia Csapo, Ahn Nguyen, Annabel Rognon and Nadine Rastetter. The clincher finally came at the top spot where 30th-ranked Angela Lawrence used three sets to come back and upset 27th-ranked Dora Djilianova, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4.
"We played as well as can be expected," Pepperdine Head Coach Gualberto Escudero said. "I thought we'd have trouble at No. 1 and No. 3. We're still getting accustomed to the weather and the bounce of the ball. We hope we can get better for tomorrow."
Pepperdine now moves into Saturday's semifinal vs. the winner of Friday's UNLV-Washington State match.
