LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The UNLV team of Susie Kocsis and Gee Gee Garvin moved up 36 spots to No. 4 to earn the highest doubles ranking in school history as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's fall rankings were released Tuesday, Dec. 9.
Kocsis, a junior from Budapest, Hungary, and Garvin, a sophomore from Vista, Calif., went 9-2 in their first semester playing together. The run included winning the UNLV Fall Invitational and reaching the semi-finals of the Riviera All-American Championships in late October.
The pair is tied for fourth with Florida's Dawn Buth and Stephanie Nickitas, who were the nation's top-ranked doubles team heading into fall tournament play. Teams from Georgia, Pepperdine and Mississippi are ranked first through third respectively.
The previous best ranking for a UNLV women's duo came one year ago when former Lady Rebel star Marianne Vallin and partner Veronica Goude peaked at No. 13.
The women's team earned a ranking of No. 37, falling 10 spots from the pre-season poll. The Lady Rebels open their dual match season by hosting Weber State at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on January 30.
The ITA player rankings were produced by a computer formula while the team spots were decided by a national committee vote. The next rankings are scheduled to be released in February.
