LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team (32-19) was held to four hits in its 2-0 loss to the UC Riverside Highlanders (35-22) Thursday night in the regional semifinal of the National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC).
The contest was scoreless until the fourth when UCR’s Jenae Lockwood hit a one-out solo homer to left field. Two innings later, the Highlanders would push across an insurance run off an RBI single from Brittney Garcia.
UNLV managed to get six runners on base against Tayler Misfeldt (18-11); however, the UCR hurler did not allow one Rebel to advance past second base, with three of those stranded at second. In all, she threw a complete game and struck out seven against four hits and two walks.
With the win, UCR advances to Friday’s regional championship at 3:00 pm, while UNLV will square off with in-state rival UNR at 12:00 pm, with the winner advancing to face the Highlanders.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Jade Yadao-Valdez scattered half of UNLV’s hits with two singles.
STAT OF THE GAME: The teams combined to strand 14 base runners with nine of those left in scoring position. In all, UCR left two at third base, while seven were at second when an inning came to a close.
REBEL NOTES:
- UNLV’s Breana Burke (5-5) suffered the loss in 4.1 innings of work after allowing one run off of three hits and one walk.
- UNLV’s Janine Petmecky threw the final 2.2 innings and allowed one run off of three hits and two walks.
- The Rebels have won 11 of their last 15 games dating back to April 8; however, they have lost two of their last three.
- The Rebels are 5-3 this season in two-run games.
- The Rebels are 7-6 in shutouts.
- The Rebels are 4-17 when scoring two or fewer runs in a game.

UP NEXT: With the loss, UNLV drops into the NISC regional loser’s bracket and will face in-state rival UNR at 12:00 pm Friday for the chance to face UCR in the regional championship at 3:00 pm. An “if necessary” game would be played at 6:00 pm if the 12:00 pm winner was to defeat UCR in the first championships game.
