Mark Shannon enters his first year with the Rebels as a volunteer assistant coach at UNLV after being added to the program's staff by Rebel head coach Stan Stolte in August 2021.Â
The Litttleton, Colo. native graduated from Chatfield Senior High in 2009 as a 3-sport athlete (baseball, basketball, football). Shannon attended University of Northern Colorado, earning Freshman All American honors, as well as being named the Great West Newcomer of the Year. Played in 40 games, posting a .326 batting average, and a record of 6-3 on the mound, with a 4.52 ERA in 83 innings pitched.

Shannon transferred to Central Arizona Junior College in 2010, helping the team get to the NJCAA Championship. Earned NJCAA All-Region 1 and ACCAC All-Conference honors, posting a .294 batting average and a record of 8-2 on the mound, with a 2.19 ERA.

Spent the next two seasons at UNLV, posting a .313 and .309 batting average between the junior and senior seasons. On the mound, compiled a 3-3 and 4-2 record between the two seasons. He was named Second Team All Mountain West his senior year, as well as being named to the 2013 Olerud Watch List for the top 25 two way players in the NCAA.
Shannon was drafted in the 24th round of the 2013 MLB draft to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as an outfielder. Played in 236 games at the minor league level, reaching as high as AA for the Angels. Carried a batting average of .276 throughout, amassing 24 HR, 119 RBIs, and 139 runs scored in two and a half seasons.
