Biography
UNLV: One of the top transfers in the nation comes to the Rebels for his final season … A graduate transfer from powerhouse program Ohio State who is immediately eligible and expected to play No. 1 in both singles and doubles this spring … Finished last season ranked No. 54 in doubles for the Buckeyes after rising as high as No. 3 in the nation on Feb. 20, 2019 ... Ranked for much of the season in singles as well, rising as high as No. 81 ... Ranked No. 113 in the 2019 preseason for the Rebels, he went on a run at the prestigious Milwaukee Tennis Classic in September, making it to the semifinals ... Won four straight matches at the event -- all in straight sets -- including 6-3, 7-5 over 121st-ranked and fifth-seeded Paul Barretto of Cal to advance to the final four ... Moving indoors because of weather, Kobelt was downed by seventh-seeded Mor Bulis of USC in a tight match, 7-6, 7-5.
OHIO STATE: Played his first three seasons for the Buckeyes of the Big Ten Conference … A top student who thrice earned OSU Scholar-Athlete honors and twice earned Academic All-Big Ten ... Graduated in 2019 from OSU's Fisher School of Business with a degree in marketing.
2020: Helping UNLV go 13-1 overall, his senior season was a success... Kobelt went 14-5 overall in singles including 7-2 in duals and 7-3 on tour. In doubles, we went 12-5 overall with his partner Jordan Sauer (11-7)... including 9-4 in dual and 3-1 on tour... Kobelt recently got named All-Mountain West in both singles and doubles, he led a crew that bolted to its first 10-0 start in program history and set the school record for season winning percentage at .929... he was also named from one of the three Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes for 2020 and was in the 2020 Academic All-Mountain West Team
2019: Turned in a dominant junior season en route to being named Second Team All-Big 10 and helping the 32-3 Buckeyes earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Championships before falling in the quarterfinals ... Finished 26-6 overall in singles, including 20-3 in dual matches ... Went a perfect 7-0 vs. Big 10 opponents while playing primarily at the No. 5 position (17-2) ... He and doubles partner finished 22-6 overall, including 14-2 at the second spot in the dual lineup ... The duo did not lose in eight conference matches ... Went 4-2 vs. ranked opponents during the season ... Played a key role in Ohio State's 2019 ITA National Indoor Championship title run as he was the only Buckeye to win both his singles and doubles matches in the finals against Wake Forrest and was named to the ITA Indoor All-Tournament Team at No. 2 doubles.
2018: Went 7-4 in singles matches and had a 3-2 mark at the No. 6 singles spot … Finished 5-3 in doubles matches … Advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Singles Championship in the fall before losing to teammate Matt Mendez … Helped the Buckeyes defeat No. 11 Florida with a win at No. 6 singles.
2017: Finished his first season with a 6-2 singles record and a 3-3 doubles mark … Made his Buckeye debut with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Chase Colton of Wisconsin at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship … Played in four dual matches, winning three of them.
2016: Redshirted.
HIGH SCHOOL: A 2015 graduate of New Albany HS in Ohio … A four-year letterman who finished third at the state championships for the Eagles.
PERSONAL: Alexander Paul Kobelt was born in Columbus, OH … The son of Paul and Paula Kobelt … Has an older brother, Peter, who was a four-time All-American at Ohio State before forging a pro career; and an older sister, Maddie, who was a nationally ranked player at Syracuse before also turning pro … Pursuing his master's degree from UNLV in urban leadership.
