Former collegiate star Michael Calderone is in his first season as UNLV men's tennis assistant in 2014-15.

"Michael has really hit the ground running," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "His strong tennis background and great character will be a big part of our success as a program this season."

Calderone came to Las Vegas from the mid-Michigan area where he was a private tennis instructor last year. Before that he was teaching professional at Agape Academy in Milton, Ga., and had other coaching stops in Michigan, Georgia and Kansas.

A 2011 graduate of Western Michigan University, Calderone earned his bachelor's degree in recreation management after turning in a record-breaking career on the courts for his alma mater. Lettering from 2008-11, he left as the Broncos' career leader in overall victories with 216 after helping WMU to three NCAA Tournament appearances. A three-time first team all-league honoree, Calderone was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year after his senior campaign in Kalamazoo.

The UNLV men's team opens its fall season today by participating in the Napa Valley Collegiate Invitational being played at the Silverado Resort in California.
