Joe Moeller became Deputy Director for Championship Resources for UNLV Athletics in October 2024. Reporting to the Director of Athletics and serving on his senior executive staff, Moeller is responsible for developing, executing and leading a Championship Resources Program in support of UNLV Athletics.
Having spent his entire career in fundraising, public relations, marketing, media relations, multi-media rights and sponsorships, he came to Las Vegas from Tucson, Arizona, with a wealth of experience and more than 30 years in sports business.
While at the University of Arizona, he served as Vice President and General Manager of one of the most respected and successful intercollegiate multimedia rights programs in the country. Arizona Wildcat Sports Properties secured $10+ million in annual partnerships from more than 100 corporate, civic and business relationships more than doubling EBITDA during his tenure.
Prior to his move to Arizona, Moeller resided in San Diego, California, as President of MoJoe Group negotiating multimillion-dollar marketing, licensing, endorsement and sponsorship agreements for clients. From 2004-08, he also served as President of the San Diego Sports Commission delivering more than $280 million in economic impact attracting and leading major events such as the 2006 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, 2006 Inaugural World Baseball Classic, 2006 McDonald’s All-American Basketball Games, 2007 & 2008 Red Bull World Air Races and the 2008 U.S. Open Golf Championship. Moeller was honored to be chosen as co-general manager of one of the most historic U.S. Opens in history when Tiger Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in a Monday playoff on the 19th hole at Torrey Pines.
Moeller served as Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations at San Diego State University from 2000-04, leading the Aztec Athletic Foundation, corporate sponsorships, marketing, media relations and ticketing. While on Montezuma Mesa, external revenue rose 260% thanks to the newly created Director’s Cabinet, a consortium of top business and civic leaders in San Diego. He also served as sports administrator for women’s and men’s basketball, which returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2002 for the first time since 1985 under second-year head coach Steve Fisher.
Prior to his time in Southern California, Moeller also championed multimillion-dollar capital campaigns at the University of South Dakota, Truman State University and Arizona State University.
The West Point, Iowa native, holds a bachelor's degree in communications from the University of South Dakota, where he served as the captain of the men's basketball team. He went on to earn a master's degree in higher education administration from Arizona State University.Â
