LAS VEGAS - UNLV offensive lineman John Greer has been named to the 1999 GTE Academic All-District VIII Football Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Monday.

Greer, a 6-5, 290-pound tackle from Apple Valley, Calif., is a former walk-on who has started 30 of 31 career games. He has graded highest among Rebel blockers in all nine games this fall and averages eight knockdowns on the line per game.

Greer has a career grade point average of 3.50 and is majoring in finance. The junior won Academic All-WAC honors last season and was a member of the Rebel Academic Top 30.

He is one of five linemen among the 24 players named to the first team, which was voted on by members of CoSIDA. UNLV's district consists of schools from the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
