Two Rebels Receive Soccer Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Two UNLV men?s soccer players received 1999 All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors, the league announced Thursday.

Senior defender Todd Roberts (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) and sophomore forward Jason Melendez (Lakewood, CA/Mayfair) were both tabbed Second Team All-MPSF Mountain Division at their respective positions.

Roberts was a four-year starter for the Rebels at stopper. He concluded his career as one of UNLV?s top offensive defenders, registering three goals and two assists over his last two seasons. As a team captain, he anchored the defense in 1999, which posted two shutouts and four one-goal matches. He also received the 1996 Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually to the team?s outstanding freshman.

Melendez was one of just two sophomores in the league to receive All-MPSF honors. He led the Rebels in scoring for the second straight year and finished seventh in the conference with 20 points on eight goals and four assists. He is UNLV's leading scorer among active players with 35 career points and 13 goals.

UNLV finished the 1999 season with a 7-11-0 record and a 2-5-0 mark in the MPSF. The rest of the All-MPSF team follows.
