April 5, 1998 LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team posted a come from behind 13-11 victory over New Mexico on Sunday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium at Roger Barnson Field.
UNLV won two out of three games against the Lobos. UNLV won 8-7 on Friday night and lost 15-10 on Saturday afternoon. UNLV improves to 25-14 overall and 8-7 in the WAC South Division and New Mexico is 16-21 overall and 6-10 in the WAC South Division.
UNLV trailed 8-0 after 1 1/3 innings. The Rebels then scored five runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 8-5. Junior second baseman Sean Campbell hit an opposite field grand slam home run to left field.
UNLV scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth with two outs. Sophomore outfielder Ryan Ludwick's two-run single cut the Lobo's lead to 9-8. Junior third baseman Kevin Eberwein then hit a booming triple off the centerfield fence to give the Rebels a 10-9 lead.
The Lobs came right back and scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead 11-10.
UNLV then went ahead to stay in the seventh. Sophomore designated hitter Tony DeMarco lined a two-out double to right center to give UNLV a 12-11 lead.
Junior right-hander Bill Scheffels recorded the victory (3-1) and junior right-hander Jimmy Smith registered his sixth save. Junior right-fielder Nate Smith was 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored. DeMarco was 2-for-5 and Eberwein was 3-for-5 with 3 RNI with a double, triple and home run.
UNLV will continue its six-game homestand when Air Force comes to town this weekend. The WAC three-game series will begin on Friday, April 10, at 7:05 p.m. at Wilson Stadium.
