Baseball Takes Two Out of Three Against Fresno State

LAS VEGAS - The 22nd-ranked UNLV baseball team won two out of three games against Fresno State (Feb. 27 - March 1) in the WAC opener at Earl E. Wilson Stadium at Roger Barnson Field. UNLV, winners of eight out of its last 10 games, improves to 14-5 overall and 2-1 in the WAC.

Fresno State won the opener, 7-3, on Friday. The Bulldogs rallied from a 3-0 deficit to post the victory. Fresno State scored four runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the seventh inning. Junior right-hander Jeff Weaver picked up his second victory of the season.

UNLV won the second game of the series, 5-4, on Saturday. The Rebels scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to rally from a 4-2 deficit. Junior first baseman Sean Campbell hit a two out three-run home run to right field to cap off the rally. Junior right-hander Mike Zipser recorded the victory to run his record to 4-1 on the season. He allowed only one hit over the final seven innings to record his second complete game of the season.

UNLV won the rubber game, 6-5, on Sunday. Junior shortstop Eliott Sarabia's two out single in the bottom of the eighth scored freshman third baseman Bobby Pierce to lead the Rebels to the victory. Sophomore right-hander Andy McCulloch picked up the victory in relief to improve to 3-0. Junior right-hander Jimmy Smith pitched the final two outs to record his fourth save. Junior left-hander Mike Lopez pitched three scoreless innings in relief during the middle innings.

UNLV will host the Coors/Desert Classic which will begin on Thursday, March 5, at Wilson Stadium. UNLV will face Oral Roberts at 1:30 p.m. and Cal State Northridge at 5 p.m.
