LAS VEGAS - The Rebel softball program will be honoring Associate Head Coach Carol Spanks Saturday, May 6 after the UNLV softball game against Utah. Spanks is retiring from coaching after a long and successful career that spans over 40 years as a player and a coach, and includes the last five seasons at UNLV.
Spanks recorded her 700th win with the Rebels last season and her career record currently stands at 725-433-5. As a player Spanks was a 13-time Amateur Softball Association All-American shortstop and pitcher. In 1985 she began her collegiate coaching career as the Head Coach of Cal Poly Pomona and was named the 1985 and 1989 Big West Coach of the Year as well as the 1989 and 1992 Regional Coach of the Year. She came to UNLV in 1995 as the Associate Head Coach and helped coach UNLV to a third place finish at the College World Series in her first season. She has made a total of six College World Series and 12 NCAA tournament appearances in her coaching career. She was inducted into the ASA Hall of Fame in 1981 and the National Softball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1994.
The schedule for this weekend's three-game series against Utah has changed. A doubleheader will be played on Friday and a single game on Saturday, both beginning at 1:00pm. The ceremony for Spanks, as well as the three graduating seniors, will take place after Saturday's game. The first 100 fans will receive UNLV t-shirts at Saturday's game.
