TUCSON, Ariz. - Freshman right fielder Shelley Duncan capped a two-homer, six-RBI day with a bases loaded double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, giving Arizona a 12-11 come-from-behind victory over UNLV here Wednesday afternoon.
Arizona improved to 11-0 with the win, dropping UNLV to 2-3.
Duncan hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and a two-run shot in the sixth, giving him six of the Cats' 13 homers on the season. In the two-game sweep of UNLV, Duncan went 5-for-9 with two doubles, three homers and eight runs driven in.
With the game tied 8-8 in the top of the ninth, UNLV came up with three runs off of Duncan, making his first collegiate appearance on the mound. But in the bottom of the ninth, the Cats rallied for their 11th straight win.
With one out, junior catcher Dennis Anderson doubled off of the Rebels' senior righty Bill Scheffels. Pinch-runner Kelsey Osburn stayed at second as senior second baseman Andy Juday, who went 4-for-4 with four runs scored, lofted a single to left. Senior right-hander Jimmy Smith then relieved Scheffels for UNLV. He allowed junior center fielder Troy Gingrich to single, loading the bases. Sophomore shortstop Keoni DeRenne hit a deep sacrifice fly to left, allowing all three runners to move up a base. Sophomore Brad Fendley then pinch hit, coaxing a walk on a 3-2 pitch to bring up Duncan.
With a 1-1 count, Duncan lofted a fly ball deep down the right field line, scoring all three runners.
