Hustlin' Rebels Take Two of Three from Spartans

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team defeated San Jose State two out of three games this past weekend in WAC action (Fri-Sun., April 9-11) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium at Roger Barnson Field. UNLV improved to 20-22 overall and are now in sole possession in third place in the WAC with a 9-6 record at the midway point in the conference standings. UNLV trails first place Rice (15-3) by 4.5 games. San Jose State is now 17-18-1 overall and 8-7 in the WAC.

On Friday night, senior right-hander Bill Scheffels hurled his second straight complete game in UNLV's 5-2 victory over the Spartans. Scheffels allowed 9 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. He retired the final five batters to even his record at 2-2.

UNLV took advantage of four San Jose State errors that led to three unearned runs. Senior leftfielder Chris Adolph, who was 7-for-14 in the series, was 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI and junior first baseman Brian Hertel was 2-for-4.

On Saturday night, sophomore right-hander Jeremy Rogelstad (3-5) shutout UNLV on only four hits in a 6-0 victory, UNLV's lowest hit total of the season. He didn't walk a batter and struck out 9. Junior right-hander Andy McCulloch had another solid outing for UNLV but suffered the loss (3-5). He worked 5.2 innings and allowed 5 runs.

SJSU led 1-0 in the top of the sixth and scored four runs with two outs to increase its lead to 5-0. The shutout marked the first time since April 26, 1997, that a UNLV team failed to score a (102 games).

On Sunday afternoon, UNLV's bats came alive with 9 runs and 15 hits (The Rebels won 9-8). UNLV trailed 5-4 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. UNLV scored five runs in the inning to take the lead for good. Junior outfielder Ryan Ludwick, who was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI, capped the scoring off with a two-run home run (his eighth) to left field.

Adolph was 3-for-5 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI and junior designated hitter Tony DeMarco was 2-for-5 and junior rightfielder Nate Kaup was 2-for-4. Senior right-hander Jimmy Smith recorded his fifth save.

UNLV continued to play stellar defense as the Rebels have played five straight games of errorless baseball.

UNLV has now won five out of seven and are 16-10 over its last 26 games. UNLV will embark on a four-game roadtrip which begins in Salt Lake City on Thursday-Saturday, April 15-17, against Utah. The three-games series will be broadcast live on KSFN AM-1140 with Scott Robbs and Scott Taylor. Game times are 1 p.m. (PST); 11 a.m. (PST); 11 a.m. (PST).
