Men's Basketball Hosts Troy State and USC

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Runnin Rebels continue their four-game homestand against Troy State on Monday, Nov. 16, at 7:35 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center (18,500). UNLV will unveil the 1998 WAC Championship banner and conduct the ring ceremony prior to tipoff. UNLV then will host USC on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7:35 p.m.. The Runnin Rebels have a stretch of four games in the first 11 days of the 98-99 campaign.

All Runnin Rebel games will be carried live on KXNT AM-840. Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick will call the action all season long. The pregame show for Mondays game will begin at 7 p.m. Fans can bring their radio to the game and tune in to KXNTs radio broadcast inside the Thomas & Mack Center on 99.5 FM. RADIO/TV SHOW INFO: "Game Time with UNLV Hoops" television show will be shown every Sunday on KLAS TV-8 at 5:30 p.m. (begins Nov. 29). The show, with Head Coach Bill Bayno and host Chris Maathuis, features previews of upcoming opponents and highlights of previous games.

"The Bill Bayno Radio Show" can be heard live every Tuesday from Gordon Biersch (located on 3987 Paradise Road) at 7 p.m on KXNT AM-840 with hosts Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick. The weekly show features interviews with coaches, opposing coaches as well as listener call-ins. Listeners are invited to call in to the show at (702) 733-5968. First coaches show will be on Monday, Nov. 30.

PROMOTIONS: The first 2,500 fans will receive water bottles from 24 Hour Fitness at the Troy State game on Nov. 16. The first 2,500 fans will receive baseball caps from Nextlink at the USC game on Nov. 20. Bring a canned food item and receive $2 off the admission or show the ticket stub from the TCU-UNLV football game on Nov. 21 and receive $2 off the admission at the Weber State game on Nov. 24.

UNLV VS. SACRED HEART RECAP: The Runnin Rebels opened their 41st season of basketball on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Thomas & Mack Center with a 103-56 victory over Sacred Heart, which is the alma mater of UNLV head coach Bill Bayno. UNLV dominated the game from the opening tip. UNLV raced out to a 32-8 lead with 11:49 left in the half. UNLVs biggest lead of the half was 42 points at 57-15 (1:49) on a 3-pointer from freshman guard Desmond Herod.

UNLV led 60-19 at halftime and shot a blistering .714 from the field (25-for-35). Sophomore center Kaspars Kambala and junior forward Shawn Marion led UNLV with 16 points each at intermission. All 13 Runnin Rebel players saw action in the game.

UNLV held its biggest lead of the night at 59 points on a layup from junior guard Mark Dickel, giving UNLV a 95-36 lead with 7:12 to play. Kambala scored a career-high 25 points (11-for-13 FG) in 17 minutes and Marion added 18 in his Runnin Rebel debut. Senior forward Kevin Simmons rounded out the double figure scoring with 17. Dickel added 10 assists (two under his career high) and sophomore guard Greedy Daniels dished out a career-high 10 assists in 21 minutes.

Sacred Heart was led by Andrew Hunter and John Randazzo with 13 points each. UNLV shot .638 from the field (44-for-69) and Sacred Heart shot .290 (20-for-69). UNLV outrebounded Sacred Heart 53-33.

REBEL BASKETBALL LUNCHEONS: The Rebel basketball luncheons featuring Bill Bayno will be held four times this season at noon at the Si Redd Room in the Thomas & Mack Center. Admittance is free to working media.

TROY STATE: Mondays game will mark the first meeting between the two schools. The Trojans compiled an overall record of 7-20 last season and are a member of the Trans America Athletic Conference. Troy State defeated VASDA All-Stars 127-88 in an exhibition game on Thursday, Nov. 5. Mondays game against UNLV will be the season opener for Troy State.

TROY STATE HEAD COACH DON MAESTRI: He is in his 17th season at Troy State and his record is 270-182 (.597).

RUNNIN REBEL HEAD COACH BILL BAYNO: He is in his fourth season as the head coach of the UNLV Runnin Rebels. He is UNLVs 10th head coach in the 40-year history of Rebel basketball. He has a career record of 53-39 (.576) in three seasons at the helm of Runnin Rebel basketball. Bayno has recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons (42-23 record over that stretch) and has guided UNLV to postseason play for two straight seasons. UNLV compiled an overall record of 22-10 in 1996-97 in Baynos second season.

UNLV more than doubled its win total from 1995-96 (10-16 record). UNLV advanced to the third round of the NIT. Last season, UNLV compiled an overall record of 20-13. The Runnin Rebels had a remarkable run winning four games in five days in the WAC Tournament. UNLV posted victories over Hawaii, Utah, Fresno State and New Mexico to capture the WAC Tournament championship and receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UNLV reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1990-91 season. UNLV faced eighth-ranked Princeton in the NCAA East Regionals in Hartford, Conn. Bayno served seven years as the associate head coach at the University of Massachusetts under John Calipari (now head coach of the NBAs New Jersey Nets).

Other coaching experience includes: 1987-88: Assistant Coach, Baptist College (Charleston, SC); 1986-87: Graduate Assistant Coach, University of Kansas; 1985-86: Graduate Assistant Coach, Seton Hall University. Playing experience includes: 1980-82: Massachusetts and 1983-85: Sacred Heart University.

3-POINT GOALS: Since the 3-point field goal was adopted by the NCAA in 1986-87, UNLV has converted at least one 3-pointer in all 390 games played (counting 1 game this season). The Big West Conference experimented with the 3-point shot in the 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. During that period, UNLV connected from 3-point range in 53 of 64 games. The UNLV streak for games in which it sank at least one 3-point shot stands at 403. The last time the Runnin Rebels failed to make at least one 3-pointer came against Long Beach State on Jan. 25, 1986.

USC: The Trojans compiled an overall record of 9-19 last season and 5-13 (8th) in the PAC 10. USC will open the 1998-99 season against San Diego State on Wednesday, Nov. 18. USC was 2-0 in exhibition games. The Trojans defeated I-Can All-Stars twice (two different squads) by the scores of 122-62 (Nov. 7) and 101-54 (Nov. 14).

SERIES HISTORY: The series is tied 2-2. UNLV has won the last two meetings. UNLV defeated USC 82-72 last season (Dec. 2, 1997) at the L.A. Sports Arena. Greedy Daniels led UNLV with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals in 32 minutes. Corky Ausborne was UNLVs high scorer with 19 points. The Runnin Rebels defeated USC 80-75 on Dec. 28, 1996 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

USC HEAD COACH HENRY BIBBY: He is in his third season at USC and his record is 26-30 (.464).

HOME RECORD: UNLV has compiled a record of 42-13 (.764) under Bill Bayno at the Thomas & Mack Center over four seasons. UNLV is 33-7 (.825) over the last two plus seasons.

NOTES: The 103 points scored against Sacred Heart in the season opener was the first 100-point game for UNLV since Dec. 30, 1994, at Central Florida. UNLV defeated Central Florida 103-90 in overtime...the last time UNLV scored 100 points at the Thomas & Mack Center was against Nevada, Reno on Feb. 25, 1993. UNLV won 100-93...UNLV recorded 60 points in the first half against Sacred Heart...the last time UNLV scored 60 points in a half was against UC Irvine on Dec. 19, 1992...the Runnin Rebels scored 60 points in the second half in rout to a 115-97 victory...

UNLV shot .638 from the field (44-for-69) against Sacred Heart...the last time UNLV shot 60 percent or better in a game was against Air Force .608 (31-for-51) on Feb. 20, 1997 at the T&M...the 47-point victory over Sacred Heart marks the largest margin of victory under coach Bill Bayno...the previous was a 37-point victory over Chicago State (86-49) on Dec. 17, 1997.
