Rebels Baseball Sweeps Two-Game Series

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team defeated fourth-ranked Arizona 8-6 to sweep the two-game series on Wednesday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium at Roger Barnson Field. UNLV defeated Arizona 6-3 on Tuesday night in the first game. UNLV improved its record to 21-8 overall and Arizona dropped to 25-7.

UNLV, trailing 3-0, scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Rebels sent 10 men to the plate off right-hander Dave Abbott. UNLV collected six straight hits by Chris Adolph, Ryan Ludwick, Tony DeMarco, Kevin Eberwein, Ryan Hamill and Sean Campbell.

Junior right-hander Bill Scheffels worked 7 plus innings to improve his record to 2-1. Arizona tied the game at 6-6 on a two-run double by first baseman Kenny Corley in the top of the fifth. Corley was 2-for-3 with 5 RBI, which included a three-run home run in the top of the first inning.

UNLV scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings off loser Daniel Tyrrell. DeMarco led off the fifth with a double and scored on an error by third baseman Omar Moraga. Outfielder Nate Smith singled to lead off the sixth inning and scored on a wild pitch.

Junior right-hander Jimmy Smith recorded his team-leading fifth save by retiring the last four batters of the game.

UNLV will return to WAC play when they host 13th-ranked Rice on Friday-Sunday, March 20-22 at Wilson Stadium.
