Rebels Host Rice on Thursday, Tulsa on Saturday

LAS VEGAS- The UNLV Runnin Rebels will host Rice on Thursday, Jan. 14, at 7:35 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center (18,500). UNLV then will close out the three-game homestand against Tulsa on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 7:35 p.m. The combined overall records of Rice (11-3) and Tulsa (14-3) are 25-6 (.806).

All Runnin Rebel games will be carried live on KXNT AM-840. Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick will call the action all season long. The pregame show for Thursday and Saturdays games will begin at 7 p.m. Fans can bring their radio to the game and tune in to KXNTs radio broadcast inside the Thomas & Mack Center on 99.5 FM. Runnin Rebel basketball can be heard on www.broadcast.com

TELEVISION: The Rice-UNLV game will not be televised. Saturdays game will be televised by FOX Sports West 2. Tom Kelly and Reggie Theus will call the action.

RADIO/TV SHOW INFO: "Game Time with UNLV Hoops" television show will be shown every Sunday on KLAS TV-8 at 5:30 p.m. The show, with Head Coach Bill Bayno and host Chris Maathuis, features previews of upcoming opponents and highlights of previous games.

"The Bill Bayno Radio Show" can be heard live every Tuesday from Gordon Biersch (located on 3987 Paradise Road) at 7 p.m on KXNT AM-840 with hosts Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick. The weekly show features interviews with coaches, opposing coaches as well as listener call-ins. Listeners are invited to call in to the show at (702) 733-5968. The next two coaches shows will air on Tuesday, Jan. 12 and Tuesday, Jan. 19.

PROMOTIONS: Rice vs. UNLV - Thursday, Jan. 14: The first 2,500 fans will receive a mini basketball courtesy of Sherwin Williams Paint Centers. Tulsa vs. UNLV - Saturday, Jan. 16: The first 2,5000 fans will receive a Ted Wiens Key Chain. Fans showing a ticket stub from the Rice game will receive $2 off on a general admission ticket.

UNLV vs. AIR FORCE RECAP: UNLV defeated Air Force 91-58 in the WAC opener on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Thomas & Mack Center. It was UNLVs fourth straight victory. UNLV, which trailed 8-4, went on a 19-1 run (over 4:40) to take a commanding 23-9 lead at 13:34. Junior guard Mark Dickel scored 10 of UNLVs first 14 points. UNLV led 51-31 at halftime. UNLV shot .579 (22-for-38) from the field in the first half. Air Force cut the lead to 12 points at 53-41 with 16:17 to play. UNLV then put the game away with a 23-6 run to lead 76-47 with 6:48 left in the game. UNLV once again had a balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures. Junior forward Shawn Marion scored a game-high 18 points (nine in each half) and sophomore center Kaspars Kambala, Dickel and freshman guard Desmond Herod all scored 13 and sophomore forward Donovan Stewart added 11. Senior forward Kevin Simmons pulled down a UNLV career-high 14 rebounds. Air Force was led by Jarvis Croff with 16 points and Billy Humphrey added 11. UNLV shot .507 (35-for-69) from the field. It marked the sixth time this season that UNLV has shot 50 percent or better from the field. AFA shot .355 (22-for-62) from the field. UNLV shot .316 (6-for-19) from 3-point range and AFA shot .273 (6-for-22). UNLV shot .556 (15-for-27) from the line and AFA shot .615 (8-for-13). AFA outrebounded UNLV 42-40. UNLV committed a season low 8 turnovers.

SERIES HISTORY: UNLV leads the series against Rice 1-0. UNLV defeated Rice 71-61 on March 4, 1997, in the WAC Tournament First Round at the Thomas & Mack Center. Three UNLV players scored 12 points (Tyrone Nesby, Warren Rosegreen, Jermaine Smith). UNLV leads the series against Tulsa 3-1. Tulsa defeated UNLV 68-65 on March 6, 1997, in the WAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Nesby led UNLV with 19 points and Michael Ruffin led Tulsa with 18 and Shea Seals added 17.

TULSA HEAD COACH BILL SELF: He is in his first season at Tulsa. His career record over five seasons is 88-69 (.561).

UNLV vs. WAC: UNLV is playing in its third and final season in the WAC. UNLV will be a member of the Mountain West Conference for the 1999-2000 season. The Runnin Rebels have an all-time record of 146-50 (.745) vs. the WAC (which includes Fresno State and San Jose State from the Big West.) UNLV has compiled a three-year WAC record of 19-12. UNLV was 11-5 in the Pacific Division in 1996-97; 7-7 in the Mountain Division in 1997-98 and 1-0 this season. UNLV captured the 1998 WAC Tournament. The Runnin Rebels are in the Mountain Division in 1998-99 (Air Force, Colorado State, Rice, SMU, TCU, Tulsa and Wyoming).

RUNNIN REBEL HEAD COACH BILL BAYNO: He is in his fourth season as the head coach of the UNLV Runnin Rebels. He is UNLVs 10th head coach in the 40-year history of Rebel basketball. He has a career record of 60-45 (.571) in four seasons at the helm of Runnin Rebel basketball. Bayno has recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons (42-23 record over that stretch) and has guided UNLV to postseason play for two straight seasons. UNLV compiled an overall record of 22-10 in 1996-97 in Baynos second season. UNLV more than doubled its win total from 1995-96 (10-16 record). UNLV advanced to the third round of the NIT. Last season, UNLV compiled an overall record of 20-13. The Runnin Rebels had a remarkable run winning four games in five days in the WAC Tournament. UNLV posted victories over Hawaii, Utah, Fresno State and New Mexico to capture the WAC Tournament championship and receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UNLV reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1990-91 season. UNLV faced eighth-ranked Princeton in the NCAA East Regionals in Hartford, Conn. Bayno served seven years as the associate head coach at the University of Massachusetts under John Calipari (now head coach of the NBAs New Jersey Nets). Other coaching experience includes: 1987-88: Assistant Coach, Baptist College (Charleston, SC); 1986-87: Graduate Assistant Coach, University of Kansas; 1985-86: Graduate Assistant Coach, Seton Hall University. Playing experience includes: 1980-82: Massachusetts and 1983-85: Sacred Heart University.

3-POINT GOALS: Since the 3-point field goal was adopted by the NCAA in 1986-87, UNLV has converted at least one 3-pointer in all 403 games played (counting 14 games this season). The Big West Conference experimented with the 3-point shot in the 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. During that period, UNLV connected from 3-point range in 53 of 64 games. The UNLV streak for games in which it sank at least one 3-point shot stands at 416. The last time the Runnin Rebels failed to make at least one 3-pointer came against Long Beach State on Jan. 25, 1986. NOTE: The other two top schools with consecutive 3-point streaks (as of Jan. 4) are Vanderbilt (396) and Princeton (362).

HOME RECORD: UNLV has compiled a record of 47-16 (.746) under Bill Bayno at the Thomas & Mack Center over four seasons. UNLV is 38-10 (.792) over the last three seasons.

Pre-season ranking: The Runnin Rebels were ranked 25th by Sports Illustrateds 1998 preseason Top 25 (Nov. 23 issue).
100-point games: The 103 points scored against Sacred Heart in the season opener was the first 100-point game for UNLV since Dec. 30, 1994, at Central Florida. UNLV defeated Central Florida 103-90 in overtime...the last time UNLV scored 100 points at the Thomas & Mack Center was against Nevada, Reno on Feb. 25, 1993. UNLV won 100-93.
60-point half: UNLV recorded 60 points in the first half against Sacred Heart...the last time UNLV scored 60 points in a half was against UC Irvine on Dec. 19, 1992...the Runnin Rebels scored 60 points in the second half in rout to a 115-97 victory.
Shooting 60 percent: UNLV shot .638 from the field (44-for-69) against Sacred Heart...the last time UNLV shot 60 percent or better in a game was against Air Force .608 (31-for-51) on Feb. 20, 1997 at the T&M.
Victory margins: The 47-point victory over Sacred Heart marked the largest margin of victory under coach Bill Bayno...the 37-point victory over Troy State (95-58 on Nov. 16) tied the second highest margin of victory...UNLV defeated Chicago State (86-49) on Dec. 17, 1997.
Shooting 3s: UNLV shot 37 attempts from 3-point range against USC on Nov. 20...the 37 attempts is the most since the Runnin Rebels attempted 46 (21 made) against Nevada, Reno on Dec. 8, 1990 at Reno.
Shooting 50 percent: UNLV has shot 50 percent or better from the field six times this season. UNLV has a record of 5-1 in those games.
Homestand and stretch: UNLV is in the midst of playing 7 of 8 at home (which began with the Las Vegas Shootout on Dec. 19).
UNLV 0-3 vs. PAC-10: UNLV is 0-3 vs. the PAC-10 this season. The three losses were by a total of 17 points (5.7 average), vs. USC 68-71; ASU 70-79; UCLA 67-72.
Two double-doubles in same game: Kaspars Kambala (18 points and 13 rebounds) and Shawn Marion (18 points and 10 rebounds) recorded double-doubles against No. 25 Oklahoma State on Dec. 22. Two players then recorded double-doubles against Southern Utah on Dec. 28. Kaspars Kambala (26 points and 11 rebounds) and Shawn Marion (13 points and 15 rebounds). It marked the first time that two players have recorded double-doubles in the same game since Feb. 5, 1998, at Air Force (Keon Clark 18 points and 11 rebounds and Kevin Simmons 15 points and 11 rebounds).
45 Points by Columbia: UNLV allowed just 45 points to Columbia (74-45 victory on Dec. 27, 1998) and it marked the lowest point total for an opponent against UNLV since Miami scored 43 points in a 55-43 loss to UNLV on Nov. 29, 1996, at the T&M.
Winning Streaks: UNLV has won four straight heading into Thursdays game against Rice. The longest winning streak under Bill Bayno has been 7 and 6 games, respectively, which both took place during the 1996-97 season. UNLV also won 6 straight last season.
