LAS VEGAS (AP) - Kaspars Kambala scored a career-high 25 points and pulled down nine rebounds Saturday night as UNLV rolled to a 103-56 season-opening victory over outmanned Sacred Heart.
The Rebels made 44 of their 69 field goal attempts (63.8 percent), and were even hotter in 2-point tries, going 40-of-54 while making just 4-of-15 from 3-point range.
Kambala made 11 of his 13 field goal attempts; Shawn Marion went 8-of-9 in scoring 18 points in his UNLV debut, and Kevin Simmons made 6-of-8 in scoring 17 points.
Marion, a junior, was the national junior college player of the year last season while playing at Vincennes JC in Indiana.
Both UNLV point guards - Mark Dickel and Edwin Daniels - had 10 assists. Daniels also had nine rebounds to lead the Rebels to a 53-33 advantage in that department.
The Rebels led 60-19 at halftime and by as many as 59 points before settling for the 47-point margin of victory.
Andrew Hunter and John Randazzo led Sacred Heart with 13 points apiece. Randazzo also had six rebounds.
UNLV coach Bill Bayno graduated from Sacred Heart in 1985, and played for the Pioneers from 1983-85.
The opener was played before a crowd of 13,547 at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Rebels scored 100 points for the first time since beating Central Florida 103-90 in overtime on Dec. 30, 1994.
