Runnin' Rebels Battle Arizona State Dec. 5

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Runnin Rebels will travel to Phoenix, Ariz., to face Arizona State on Saturday, Dec. 5, at Noon (PST) at the America West Arena (19,023). The other game of the WAC-PAC 10 doubleheader will feature Wyoming vs. No. 11 Arizona at 2 p.m. (PST).

All Runnin Rebel games will be carried live on KXNT AM-840. Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick will call the action all season long. The pregame show for Saturdays game will begin at 11:30 a.m. (PST). Fans can bring their radio to the game and tune in to KXNTs radio broadcast inside the Thomas & Mack Center on 99.5 FM. Runnin Rebel basketball can be heard on www.broadcast.com

TELEVISION: Saturdays WAC-PAC 10 doubleheader will be televised by FOX Sports West (Channel 49 in Las Vegas). Steve Physioc and Paul Sunderland will call the action.

RADIO/TV SHOW INFO: "Game Time with UNLV Hoops" television show will be shown every Sunday on KLAS TV-8 at 4:30 p.m. The show, with Head Coach Bill Bayno and host Chris Maathuis, features previews of upcoming opponents and highlights of previous games.

"The Bill Bayno Radio Show" can be heard live every Tuesday from Gordon Biersch (located on 3987 Paradise Road) at 7 p.m on KXNT AM-840 with hosts Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick. The weekly show features interviews with coaches, opposing coaches as well as listener call-ins. Listeners are invited to call in to the show at (702) 733-5968. The next two coaches shows will air on Tuesday, Dec. 8 and Dec. 15.

TRAVEL ITINERARY: UNLV will depart for Phoenix on Thursday, Dec. 4, and will arrive at 3:20 p.m. The team will stay at the Crowne Plaza. The team will return to Las Vegas after Saturdays game and arrive at 6 p.m.

UNLV vs. UNR RECAP: UNLV defeated UNR 84-69 on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno. Sophomore guard Greedy Daniels and sophomore forward Donovan Stewart each posted career highs in the victory. Daniels led UNLV with 23 points and Stewart added 19 which accounted for half of UNLVs points. UNR led 22-13 through the first 13 minutes of the game. UNLV then took control of the game with a 22-4 run over the final 7:04 to take a 35-26 lead at halftime. UNLV enjoyed its biggest lead of the game at 16 points (48-32 at 16:33) on a dunk by junior forward Shawn Marioin. UNR cut the lead to 67-61 on a 3-pointer by John Burrell with 5:35 to play. UNLV then went on a 8-0 run to take a 14-point lead at 75-61 with 3:14 left. Daniels also led UNLV with 5 steals and Marion added his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Senior forward Kevin Simmons recorded his first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. UNR was led by Burrells 21 points and Derrick Anderson added 19. UNLV shot .560 from the field (28-for-50), .622 from the line (23-for-37), including .633 in the second half (19-for-30). UNR shot .481 from the field (26-for-54), .455 (10-for-22) from 3-point range and .389 from the line (7-for-18). UNLV outrebounded UNR 36-27.

ARIZONA STATE HEAD COACH ROB EVANS: He is in his first season at ASU and career record over 7 seasons is 88-85 (.509).

SERIES HISTORY: Arizona State leads the series against UNLV 1-0. ASU defeated UNLV 84-81 on March 6, 1975, in the NCAA West Regional in Portland, Ore.

RUNNIN REBEL HEAD COACH BILL BAYNO: He is in his fourth season as the head coach of the UNLV Runnin Rebels. He is UNLVs 10th head coach in the 40-year history of Rebel basketball. He has a career record of 56-41 (.577) in three seasons at the helm of Runnin Rebel basketball. Bayno has recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons (42-23 record over that stretch) and has guided UNLV to postseason play for two straight seasons. UNLV compiled an overall record of 22-10 in 1996-97 in Baynos second season. UNLV more than doubled its win total from 1995-96 (10-16 record). UNLV advanced to the third round of the NIT. Last season, UNLV compiled an overall record of 20-13. The Runnin Rebels had a remarkable run winning four games in five days in the WAC Tournament. UNLV posted victories over Hawaii, Utah, Fresno State and New Mexico to capture the WAC Tournament championship and receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UNLV reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1990-91 season. UNLV faced eighth-ranked Princeton in the NCAA East Regionals in Hartford, Conn. Bayno served seven years as the associate head coach at the University of Massachusetts under John Calipari (now head coach of the NBAs New Jersey Nets). Other coaching experience includes: 1987-88: Assistant Coach, Baptist College (Charleston, SC); 1986-87: Graduate Assistant Coach, University of Kansas; 1985-86: Graduate Assistant Coach, Seton Hall University. Playing experience includes: 1980-82: Massachusetts and 1983-85: Sacred Heart University.

3-POINT GOALS: Since the 3-point field goal was adopted by the NCAA in 1986-87, UNLV has converted at least one 3-pointer in all 395 games played (counting 6 games this season). The Big West Conference experimented with the 3-point shot in the 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. During that period, UNLV connected from 3-point range in 53 of 64 games. The UNLV streak for games in which it sank at least one 3-point shot stands at 408. The last time the Runnin Rebels failed to make at least one 3-pointer came against Long Beach State on Jan. 25, 1986.

HOME RECORD: UNLV has compiled a record of 44-14 (.759) under Bill Bayno at the Thomas & Mack Center over four seasons. UNLV is 35-8 (.814) over the last three seasons.

NOTES: The Runnin Rebels were ranked 25th by Sports Illustrateds 1998 preseason Top 25 (Nov. 23 issue)...the 103 points scored against Sacred Heart in the season opener was the first 100-point game for UNLV since Dec. 30, 1994, at Central Florida. UNLV defeated Central Florida 103-90 in overtime...the last time UNLV scored 100 points at the Thomas & Mack Center was against Nevada, Reno on Feb. 25, 1993. GREEDY DANIELS: Has appeared in 6 games and is averaging 9.7 points, 5.7 assists and 3.7 steals (team leader with 22). He dished out a career-high 10 assists in the season opener against Sacred Heart on Nov. 14. Tied his career-high with 6 steals against Troy State on Nov. 16. Scored 11 points against USC on Nov. 20. Scored 14 points, 7 assists and 3 steals in 27 minutes against Weber State on Nov. 24 in his first start of the season. Played perhaps his best overall game as a Rebel against UNR on Dec. 2. Scored a career-high 23 points (8-for-9 FG, 2-for-2 3PFG) with 4 assists and 5 steals in a season-high 31 minutes.

MARK DICKEL: Has appeared in 6 games and is averaging 5.2 points and 6.8 assists (team leader with 41). Has recorded 347 career assists. Dished out a season-high 10 assists in the season opener against Sacred Heart on Nov. 14. It marked the fifth time in his career that he recorded 10 or more assists in a game. Scored a season-high 11 points and had a career-high 10 3-pointers attempted (1 made) against USC on Nov. 20. Dished out 6 assists in 31 minutes and committed only 1 turnover against No. 7 Kansas on Nov. 27. Had a strong game against UNR on Dec. 2. Scored 7 points, dished out 6 assists, 3 steals in 28 minutes. Has committed just 3 turnovers over his last 59 minutes played.

ISSIAH EPPS: Has appeared in 6 games and is averaging 2.3 points and 2.8 rebounds. Recorded season-high in points (7) and rebounds (6) in the season opener against Sacred Heart on Nov. 14.

DESMOND HEROD: Has appeared in 6 games and is averaging 4.8 points. Shooting .333 (5-for-15) from 3-point range. Scored a season-high 14 points (5-for-7 FG, 2-for-4 3PFG) against Troy State on Nov. 16.

KASPARS KAMBALA: Has appeared in 6 games and is averaging 13.0 points and 6.6 rebounds (second on team). Shooting .737 (28-for-38) from the field.
