SAN DIEGO, Calif. - UNLV lost both games of a doubleheader against the Aztecs of San Diego State today in San Diego, Calif. The Rebels dropped a 0-1 decision in game one and lost 5-6 in the nightcap after taking a 5-0 lead off a Raven Coberg grand slam home run.
Game one of the doubleheader turned into a pitcher's dual between UNLV's Brandi Isgar and Tara Atkins of San Diego State. Isgar gave up one earned run in six innings of work and recorded three strike outs. The Aztecs got their run in the second inning on a RBI-double from Erryn Gutjahr. It was all San Diego State needed as the Rebels managed five hits of their own but left six runners stranded.
Isgar started for UNLV in game two as well. She pitched four innings of shut out ball and was given a comfortable lead when junior Raven Coberg hit a grand slam home run in the top of the fourth. Kelly DeArman came in relief in the fifth inning and gave up a run in the fifth and four in the sixth to tie the game at five. She faced 10 batters before Isgar was sent back in the game in the sixth with the score at 5-5. The game went into extra innings but UNLV eventually succumbed to the Aztecs with a unearned run in the eighth inning.
UNLV will return to action Tuesday, March 17 at Rebel Diamond as WAC foe New Mexico comes to town. The doubleheader will begin at noon. The Rebels will then travel to Fullerton, California for the Pony Invitational from March 19-22.
