SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Rebels traveled to face conference foe Utah and fell short in both games of a doubleheader, losing 2-3 and 2-6. The losses extend the UNLV losing streak to seven games, which the Rebels will try and end tomorrow as they visit Colorado State in Ft. Collins, Colo.
In game one of the doubleheader UNLV gave up an early run in the first inning but then answered in the second when Devon Ramos crossed the plate on a Audrey Munoz ground out. The score stayed knotted at one until the fifth inning when the Utes' Nicole Wilkinson drove in Sandy Rhea. Utah would add another run in the sixth to enter the last inning with a 3-1 advantage. Ramos and Brandi Isgar started the inning with base-hits and two consecutive outs led to a two-out base-hit by Amy Alves which scored Ramos. Good defensive play by Utah kept Isgar at third, where she was left as the game ended with the 3-2 score. Isgar took the loss for UNLV as her record fell to 9-14.
Game two started as a defensive battle as neither team could score through three innings. However, Utah exploded for six runs in the fourth and fifth inning to jump to the 6-0 lead. The Rebels battled back and took two in the sixth as a Ramos base-hit scored Julie Crandall and with the bases loaded Kristen Arbogast hit Keao Chang for the second run. It proved to be too little too late however as UNLV left two runners on base in the sixth and went down 1-2-3 in the seventh. Sophomore Danielle Ferriera was credited with the loss as her record fell to 3-5.
With the two losses, UNLV's record falls to 15-20 overall and 9-9 in the WAC. The Rebels games against Colorado State will begin at 2:00pm, weather permitting.
