April 14, 1999

LAS VEGAS - UNLV split games in a nonconference doubleheader against Long Beach State at Rebel Diamond Wednesday, losing 3-0 in game one before rebounding to take game two 4-2. The Rebels are now 14-24 overall and will return to conference action Saturday and Sunday against Tulsa.

Game one saw a pitchers dual through five innings until the 49ers finally got on the board in their half of the sixth. Christina Zepeda singled to start in the inning then scored when Jennifer Spigner hit a double to center field to drive her home. The Rebels could not answer then gave up two insurance runs in the seventh inning on three 49er hits as Long Beach State went on to win by the 3-0 score. Geney Orris picked up the loss for UNLV to bring her record to 5-12 on the season.

The Rebels rebounded in game two, breaking their 10-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory. Racheal Goodpaster picked up her 11th home run of the season with a solo shot in the sixth inning. She would finish 2-for-3 with two RBI on the game. Her other hit was a double that came in a third inning in which the Rebels jumped to a 3-0 lead. Cassi Dysert led off the inning with a triple and two 49er errors also aided the Rebel cause. Down 4-0 in the seventh inning, Long Beach State rallied with two outs. The 49ers scored two runs when Zepeda singled in Melanie Muniz and Natalie Walker. However, it was not enough as Rebel pitcher Nicole Truax closed out the inning for the complete game and her third win of the season.

UNLV's homestand continues with an important conference series this weekend as Tulsa comes to Rebel Diamond for a three-game series. Saturday is a doubleheader and Sunday a single game with both days beginning at noon.
