UNLV Volleyball Defeats Alaska Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Led by junior outside hitter Angie Sylvas' double-double of 15 kills and 14 digs, the UNLV volleyball team remained unbeaten as it defeated Alaska Fairbanks 3-0 (15-4, 15-12, 15-6) at the Nanook Classic at the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Patty Center.

UNLV got off to an explosive start, scoring the first six points of the match. UAF pulled within four points at 7-3, however the Rebels were too much they outscored the Nanooks 8-1 to close the game. Sylvas recorded 7 kills during the first game, hitting 54 percent.

Game two was a much closer battle. UAF started with four-straight points and took a 10-5 lead before the Rebels scored seven unanswered points. The Nanooks pulled to within one at 13-12 as UNLV scored the final two.

With the score tied at 6-6 in the third game, UNLV scored the final nine points of the game finishing the match on a block by junior outside hitter/middle blocker Danielle Gerlach and freshman middle blocker Amber Graham.

UNLV (2-0) was assisted in the win by senior setter Meri-de Boyer's match-highs of 15 digs and 46 assists. Sylvas' 15 kills was a match-high and it was her second double-double of the season.

Junior middle blocker Jenny Kirst led UAF (2-4) with 10 kills, while junior setter Kamilah Webb had a team-high 12 digs.

The Rebels recorded 59 kills to UAF's 40 and out-dug the Nanooks 62-60. UNLV had a hitting percentage of .302, while UAF's was .158.

UNLV will conclude play in the classic Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. ADT match against Duke.
