LAS VEGAS - The UNLV volleyball team remained undefeated Friday as it won two matches at the Official All-Star Cafe/UNLV Volleyball Classic at Lied Gymnasium on the campus of UNLV.
Led by sophomore outside hitter Justine Kamelamela's double-double of 14 kills and 12 digs, UNLV defeated Youngstown State 3-0 (15-10, 16-14, 15-6) in the early match.
UNLV (5-0) was assisted in the win by freshman outside hitter Nora Bernson's season-high 14 kills. Senior setter Meri-de Boyer recorded a match-high 47 assists for the Rebels. The 5-0 start for UNLV ties the program's best-ever start when the Rebels went 5-0 in 1979.
Youngstown State (1-5) was led by junior middle hitter Vickie Robinson and sophomore middle hitter Rebecca Sylak who had 12 kills each. Senior defensive specialist Katie Wright recorded a match-high 17 digs.
In the later match, UNLV defeated New Mexico State 3-1 (8-15, 15-4, 15-10, 15-1). Kamelamela recorded a match-high 19 kills, while junior middle blocker Christel Eves and junior outside hitter Angie Sylvas each had 14. Sophomore defensive specialist Keala Nihipali helped the Rebels with a season-high 17 digs. Three other Rebels were in double figures in digs as UNLV out-hit NMSU .684 to .000 in the fourth game of the match to seal the win.
New Mexico State (2-4), which won the first game of the match, was led by junior setter Jessica Rombach's six kills and junior outside hitter Anika Donaldson's 10 digs.
In Friday's other action Southwest Texas State (4-2) defeated New Mexico State 3-0 (18-16, 15-7, 15-8).
The classic will conclude Saturday with Youngstown State facing Southwest Texas State at 10:30 a.m., New Mexico State against Youngstown State at 1:30 p.m. and Southwest Texas State playing UNLV at 4:30 p.m.
