UNLV Volleyball Suffers Season's First Defeat

LAS VEGAS - Led by senior outside hitter Makeda Smith's match-high 30 kills, Southwest Texas State defeated the UNLV volleyball team 3-1 (13-15, 16-14, 16-14, 17-15) to capture the Official All-Star Cafe/UNLV Volleyball Classic at Lied Gymnasium and give UNLV its first loss of the season.

UNLV (5-1) was led by all-tournament selection and sophomore outside hitter Justine Kamelamela's career-high 28 kills. Junior outside hitter Angie Sylvas also had a career-high in kills with 27. Three other Rebels recorded double figures in kills.

The Rebels had five players in double figures in digs including career-highs by sophomore defensive specialists Ana Ramos and Keala Nihipali. Ramos and Nihipali both recorded 19 digs. The team also set a record for most digs in a match with 96, besting the old mark of 91 set last week vs. Duke.

Smith was voted MVP of the tournament as Southwest Texas State (6-2) was assisted in the win by all-tournament selections Sheneque Bedford, a sophomore middle blocker, and Nicky Rose, a senior setter.

In Saturday's other action Southwest Texas State defeated Youngstown State (1-7) 3-0 (15-12, 15-3, 15-13) and New Mexico State (3-4) defeated Youngstown State 3-0 (15-11, 16-14, 15-13).

UNLV's next action will be at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., Sept. 18-19. UNLV will face Idaho, North Carolina, Cincinnati and George Mason in the round-robin tournament.
