FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Led by junior outside hitter Angie Sylvas' double-double of 14 kills and 18 digs, the UNLV volleyball team defeated Iowa State of the Big 12 Conference 3-0 (15-13, 15-5, 15-12) in its first match of the season at the Nanook Classic at the University of Alaksa Fairbanks' Patty Center.
After trailing 4-0 and 13-6 in the first game, the Rebels rallied to tie the score at 13 points each, then put the game away as junior outside hitter Angie Sylvas recorded a service ace for the 15th point to win game one.
It was all Rebels in game two as UNLV charged out to a 9-1 lead. Iowa State closed within five points at 10-5, but the Rebels were too much as they scored the final five points of the game including an athletic kill by sophomore middle blocker Michele Peoples for the final point.
In the third game, UNLV jumped out to a 6-0 lead, however the Cyclones battled back to tie the score at 6-6. UNLV then took a 14-7 advantage and won on a Sylvas kill.
UNLV (1-0) was assisted in the win by junior outside hitter/middle blocker Christel Eves' 10 kills. Peoples and freshman outside hitter Nora Bernson each recorded nine kills, while Bernson added 11 digs. Senior settter Meri-de Boyer recorded 44 assists for the Rebels.
Senior middle blocker Virginia Hoss led Iowa State (0-1) with 11 kills, who were directed by first-year head coach Kerry Miller.
The Rebels out-dug the Cyclones 58 to 25, while they recorded 58 kills to ISU's 32.
UNLV will continue in the classic Friday with a 8:00 p.m. ADT match against Alaska Fairbanks and conclude Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. ADT match against Duke.
