LAS VEGAS - UNLV Lady Rebel Head Coach Regina Miller announced Tuesday that Kinesha Davis will transfer to UNLV this fall from Western Illinois University, where she played basketball as a freshman during the 1997-98 season.
Davis will be required to utilize her redshirt year during 1998-99 and will be eligible to play for UNLV as a sophomore during the 1999-2000 season.
Davis, a 5-10 guard, was third in the nation in freshman scoring last season. The leading scorer on Millers WIU squad, Davis averaged 19.4 points per game, breaking the freshman scoring record for both the Westerwinds and the Mid-Continent Conference.
Davis was selected to the All-Mid-Continent Conference First Team and was named conference Newcomer of the Year. In addition, she was selected to the conference All-Freshman Team.
"Kinesha has the ability to compete against the top guards in the country," Miller said. "I felt very fortunate that I signed a player of her caliber to WIU, as we beat out the Big Ten and Big 12 schools. I am very pleased that she chose UNLV and that I have the opportunity to work with her throughout her career.
"Sitting out this year will give her an opportunity to improve her skills to become one of the top guards in our conference. She is a great addition to our program on and off the court."
Davis also averaged 7.9 rebounds per game, 2.0 assists per game and 1.9 steals per game.
