LAS VEGAS - Quarterback Jon Denton will not be returning to the UNLV football team, Rebel Head Coach Jeff Horton announced Friday.

Denton, 21, was a two-year letterman with UNLV in 1996-97. He twice was suspended from the squad for breaking unspecified team rules. Denton missed two games last season before coming back to play the final two games. He then was suspended indefinitely a second time on February 9 of this year and missed spring practice.

"We sat down with Jon and his family today and everyone felt it was in Jon's best interest for him to look at another school," Horton said. "He needs to get a fresh start somewhere else and go to a school with a clean slate."

Horton had previously announced Denton's status with the team would be decided in early August.

"Waiting until August to decide would have been too deep in the summer," Horton said. "Now Jon gets a chance to talk to some people and decide where is the best place for him to resume his college career."
