Football Spring Practice Ends with Annual Scrimmage

LAS VEGAS - Coury Hankins ran for two touchdowns and the Rebel defense recorded five quarterback sacks as UNLV closed out spring football practice with a controlled scrimmage on a cold and windy day at Rebel Park March 7.

Hankins, who finished with 42 yards on eight carries scored on runs of 28 yards and 1 yard. Also scoring for the Rebels was redshirt freshman quarterback Chris Hayward who scrambled in from four yards.

Leading the receivers was senior Damon Williams who had three catches for 34 yards. Fifth-year senior quarterback Kevin Crook, who took over the starting job after Jon Denton was suspended indefinitely, struggled through the windy conditions, completing six passes in 17 attempts for 45 yards. Hayward completed four of seven attempts for 51 yards.

Defensively, senior All-WAC defensive end Talance Sawyer recorded two and a half sacks and Jerrad Pierucci added one and a half.

The regular season opens September 5 at Northwestern.
