Former Runnin' Rebel Great Hired as Radio Analyst

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Athletic Department announced today that former Runnin' Rebel great Ricky Sobers will serve as radio analyst for eight road games during the 1998-99 basketball season. Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick will call the action for the eight televised away games on KFBT Gold 33, Cable 6. Tony Cordasco and Sobers will call the action on KXNT AM-840 for the eight selected games. The eight games are Dec. 2 (Nevada, Reno), Jan. 2 (Cal Poly SLO), Jan. 21 (SMU), Jan. 23 (TCU), Feb. 6 (Air Force), Feb. 13 (Rice), Feb. 25 (Colorado State), Feb. 27 (Wyoming).

Sobers played two seasons at UNLV from 1973-75. He appeared in 54 career games and averaged 15.8 points (855 total). As a senior, he averaged 18.0 points and was a 1975 first round draft pick (16th pick overall) by the Phoenix Suns. At the time, he was the first basketball player in UNLV history to be drafted in the first round. He was selected as a 1975 first-team All-American. The 1974-75 Runnin' Rebels compiled an overall record of 24-5 and advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Sobers led the team in assists both seasons with 103 and 166, respectively.

He enjoyed an outstanding NBA career. Sobers played 11 seasons (1975-86) with the Phoenix Suns, Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, Washington Bullets and the Seattle Supersonics. He appeared in 821 career games and scored 10,902 points (13.3 average). Following his NBA career, He was inducted in 1987 into the UNLV Athletic Hall of Fame.
