Local Celebs Sign on for Golf Tourney

April 20, 1999

LAS VEGAS - Individual entries, priced at $1,250, are now available for the inaugural John Robinson Celebrity Invitational presented by Del Webb, the school announced Tuesday.

Limited space for foursomes also is still available for the two-day, 36-hole event scheduled for April 30-May 1. Entrants, who will be teamed with a different celebrity both days, will play 18 holes each in a scramble tournament format at the new courses at Del Webb's Anthem. Call Jim Bolla at 895-1508 for information.

The school also announced that an impressive list of celebrities - all of whom make their home in the Valley -- is now on board for the event. Local sports veterans such as former Los Angeles Raider running back Napoleon McCallum, newly elected NFL Hall of Famer Tom Mack and former Notre Dame great George Kunz are scheduled to appear. Former Major League Baseball players Marty Barrett (Boston Red Sox) and Duane Ward (Toronto Blue Jays) will join stage star Susan Anton and former local anchor John Daly, who is currently host of the syndicated national television series "Real TV."

An array of former and current coaching and playing greats already had been announced as being part of the star-studded field.

Joining UNLV's new head coach on the links will be former Oakland Raiders and current broadcasting legend John Madden, former UCLA head man Terry Donahue and Michigan legend Bo Schembechler.

Also on board is Washington Redskins head coach Norv Turner as well as two of the nation's top current collegiate coaches, R.C. Slocum of Texas A&M and Bruce Snyder of Arizona State.

Other celebrities will include former and current NFL players Marcus Allen, Ronnie Lott, Hugh McElhenny and Keyshawn Johnson. Also scheduled to appear are former UNLV players Keenan McCardell, Ickey Woods and Kenny Mayne.

The tournament is open to the public to attend.
