Men's Basketball Gears up for Cal Poly

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The UNLV Runnin Rebels will travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to face Cal Poly on Saturday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m. at Mott Gym (3,200). The game will mark UNLVs final nonconference game of the season. UNLV then will return home and open WAC play against Air Force on Saturday, Jan. 9.

All Runnin Rebel games will be carried live on KXNT AM-840. Tony Cordasco and Ricky Sobers will call the action for Saturdays game. The pregame show will begin at 6:30 p.m. Fans can bring their radio to the game and tune in to KXNTs radio broadcast inside the Thomas & Mack Center on 99.5 FM. Runnin Rebel basketball can be heard on www.broadcast.com

TELEVISION: Saturdays game will be televised by KFBT Gold 33, Cable 6. Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick will call the action. The game will also be televised on KBLR, TV-39, Cable 9 in spanish. Carlos Veliz and Ruben Herrera will provide in studio commentary.

RADIO/TV SHOW INFO: "Game Time with UNLV Hoops" television show will be shown every Sunday on KLAS TV-8 at 4:30 p.m. The show, with Head Coach Bill Bayno and host Chris Maathuis, features previews of upcoming opponents and highlights of previous games.

"The Bill Bayno Radio Show" can be heard live every Tuesday from Gordon Biersch (located on 3987 Paradise Road) at 7 p.m on KXNT AM-840 with hosts Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick. The weekly show features interviews with coaches, opposing coaches as well as listener call-ins. Listeners are invited to call in to the show at (702) 733-5968. The next two coaches shows will air on Tuesday, Jan. 5 and Tuesday, Jan. 12.

TRAVEL ITINERARY: UNLV will depart for San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Thursday Dec. 31. The team will stay at Embassy Suites (805) 549-0800. UNLV will return to Las Vegas on Sunday, Jan. 3, and arrive at 1:10 p.m. on Southwest Airlines.

UNLV vs. SOUTHERN UTAH RECAP: UNLV defeated Southern Utah 85-63 on Monday, Dec. 28, at the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV won its second straight game and finished the four-game homestand with a 2-2 record. UNLV jumped out to an early 11-5 lead after senior guard Brian Keefe connected on a 3-pointer with 16:10 to play. UNLV never trailed in the game and later took a lead of 24-13 (10:02) on a layup by sophomore guard Greedy Daniels. Southern Utah then cut the lead to 28-23 (7:07). UNLV outscored SUU 15-4 to take a 43-27 halftime lead. Sophomore center Kaspars Kambala led UNLV with 20 first-half points. UNLV came out strong in the first few minutes of the second half. Junior forward Shawn Marions tip-in at 15:32, gave UNLV a 21-point lead (53-32). UNLVs biggest lead of the game was 23 points (58-35) on a 3-point play by junior center Issiah Epps with 12:17 left. Four UNLV players scored in double figures. Kambala recorded a career-high 26 points and his 11th career double-double with 11 rebounds. Senior forward Kevin Simmons scored 14 points and 9 rebounds; Marion added 13 points and a season-high 15 rebounds and Keefe had 13. Southern Utah was led by forward Tarvish Felton with 12 points. UNLV shot .467 (28-for-60) from the field and SUU was .411 (23-for-56). UNLV shot .533 (8-for-15) from 3-point range and SUU .478 (11-for-23). UNLV shot .600 (21-for-35) from the line and SUU was .462 (6-for-13). UNLV took command on the boards with a 47-32 advantage.

CAL POLY HEAD COACH JEFF SCHNEIDER: He is in his 4th season and his record his 49-46 (.516).

SERIES HISTORY: UNLV leads the series against Cal Poly 2-1. The last meeting between the two schools took place during the 1965-66 season. UNLV defeated Cal Poly 112-83 in Las Vegas. All three meetings have been played in Las Vegas.

RUNNIN REBEL HEAD COACH BILL BAYNO: He is in his fourth season as the head coach of the UNLV Runnin Rebels. He is UNLVs 10th head coach in the 40-year history of Rebel basketball. He has a career record of 58-45 (.563) in four seasons at the helm of Runnin Rebel basketball. Bayno has recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons (42-23 record over that stretch) and has guided UNLV to postseason play for two straight seasons. UNLV compiled an overall record of 22-10 in 1996-97 in Baynos second season. UNLV more than doubled its win total from 1995-96 (10-16 record). UNLV advanced to the third round of the NIT. Last season, UNLV compiled an overall record of 20-13. The Runnin Rebels had a remarkable run winning four games in five days in the WAC Tournament. UNLV posted victories over Hawaii, Utah, Fresno State and New Mexico to capture the WAC Tournament championship and receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UNLV reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1990-91 season. UNLV faced eighth-ranked Princeton in the NCAA East Regionals in Hartford, Conn. Bayno served seven years as the associate head coach at the University of Massachusetts under John Calipari (now head coach of the NBAs New Jersey Nets). Other coaching experience includes: 1987-88: Assistant Coach, Baptist College (Charleston, SC); 1986-87: Graduate Assistant Coach, University of Kansas; 1985-86: Graduate Assistant Coach, Seton Hall University. Playing experience includes: 1980-82: Massachusetts and 1983-85: Sacred Heart University.

3-POINT GOALS: Since the 3-point field goal was adopted by the NCAA in 1986-87, UNLV has converted at least one 3-pointer in all 401 games played (counting 12 games this season). The Big West Conference experimented with the 3-point shot in the 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. During that period, UNLV connected from 3-point range in 53 of 64 games. The UNLV streak for games in which it sank at least one 3-point shot stands at 414. The last time the Runnin Rebels failed to make at least one 3-pointer came against Long Beach State on Jan. 25, 1986. NOTE: The other two top schools with consecutive 3-point streaks (as of Dec. 15) are Vanderbilt (392) and Princeton (350).

HOME RECORD: UNLV has compiled a record of 46-16 (.742) under Bill Bayno at the Thomas & Mack Center over four seasons. UNLV is 37-10 (.787) over the last three seasons.

100-point Games: The 103 points scored against Sacred Heart in the season opener was the first 100-point game for UNLV since Dec. 30, 1994, at Central Florida. UNLV defeated Central Florida 103-90 in overtime...the last time UNLV scored 100 points at the Thomas & Mack Center was against Nevada, Reno on Feb. 25, 1993. UNLV won 100-93. 60-point half: UNLV recorded 60 points in the first half against Sacred Heart...the last time UNLV scored 60 points in a half was against UC Irvine on Dec. 19, 1992...the Runnin Rebels scored 60 points in the second half in rout to a 115-97 victory.

Shooting 60 percent: UNLV shot .638 from the field (44-for-69) against Sacred Heart...the last time UNLV shot 60 percent or better in a game was against Air Force .608 (31-for-51) on Feb. 20, 1997 at the T&M.

Victory Margins: The 47-point victory over Sacred Heart marked the largest margin of victory under coach Bill Bayno...the 37-point victory over Troy State (95-58 on Nov. 16) tied the second highest margin of victory...UNLV defeated Chicago State (86-49) on Dec. 17, 1997.

Shooting 3s: UNLV shot 37 attempts from 3-point range against USC on Nov. 20...the 37 attempts is the most since the Runnin Rebels attempted 46 (21 made) against Nevada, Reno on Dec. 8, 1990 at Reno.

Shooting 50 percent: UNLV has shot .492 (128-for-260) from the field over the last five games: shot .560 (28-for-50) vs. UNR (Dec. 2), .519 (27-for-52) vs. Arizona State (Dec. 5), .489 (24-for-49) vs. UCLA; .455 (25-for-55) vs. Cincinnati; .444 (24-for-54) vs. Oklahoma State...The Runnin Rebels have shot .500 or better in 4 of 10 games and are 3-1 in those games.

Homestand and Stretch: UNLV is in the midst of playing 7 of 8 at home (which began with the Las Vegas Shootout).

UNLV 0-3 vs. PAC-10: UNLV is 0-3 vs. the PAC-10 this season. The three losses were by a total of 17 points (5.7 average), vs. USC 68-71; ASU 70-79; UCLA 67-72.

Two double-doubles in same game: Kaspars Kambala (18 points and 13 rebounds) and Shawn Marion (18 points and 10 rebounds) recorded double-doubles against No. 25 Oklahoma State on Dec. 22. It marked the first time that two players have recorded double-doubles in the same game since Feb. 5, 1998, at Air Force (Keon Clark 18 points and 11 rebounds and Kevin Simmons 15 points and 11 rebounds).

45 Points by Columbia: UNLV allowed just 45 points to Columbia (74-45 victory on Dec. 27, 1998) and it marked the lowest point total for an opponent against UNLV since Miami scored 43 points in a 55-43 loss to UNLV on Nov. 29, 1996, at the T&M.

FIVE GAMES TO BE TELEVISED BY KBLR, TV-39, CABLE 9: UNLV Sports Network announced that for the first time it will offer spanish language broadcasts of Runnin Rebel basketball. Appeared in 12 games and is averaging 16.4 points (team leader) and 8.5 rebounds (team leader). Shooting .539 (82-for-152) from the field (ranks third in the WAC) and .722 (26-for-36) from the line. Scored in double figures in all 12 games. Scored 17 points against Sacred Heart on Nov. 14; 18 points and 7 rebounds against Troy State on Nov. 16. Compiled the teams first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds against USC on Nov. 20. Scored 14 points (7-for-12 FG) and pulled down 9 rebounds and had 5 blocked shots in 30 minutes against Weber State on Nov. 24.
