Rebels Close Out Four-Game Homestand

LAS VEGAS, NEV: The UNLV Runnin' Rebels will close out the four-game homestand with back-to-back games against Columbia on Sunday, Dec. 27, and Southern Utah Univ. on Monday, Dec. 28. Both games will tipoff at 7:35 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center (18,500). UNLV just concluded three straight games against a ranked opponent (vs. No. 15 UCLA on Dec. 12; vs. No. 3 Cincinnati on Dec. 19; vs. No. 25 Oklahoma State on Dec. 22).

All Runnin' Rebel games will be carried live on KXNT AM-840. Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick will call the action all season long. The pregame show for the Sunday and Monday games will begin at 7 p.m. Fans can bring their radio to the game and tune in to KXNT's radio broadcast inside the Thomas & Mack Center on 99.5 FM. Runnin' Rebel basketball can be heard on www.broadcast.com

TELEVISION: Sunday's game will be televised by FOX Sports West 2. Tom Kelly and Reggie Theus will call the action. Monday's game will not be televised.

RADIO/TV SHOW INFO: "Game Time with UNLV Hoops" television show will be shown every Sunday on KLAS TV-8 at 4:30 p.m. The show, with Head Coach Bill Bayno and host Chris Maathuis, features previews of upcoming opponents and highlights of previous games.

"The Bill Bayno Radio Show" can be heard live every Tuesday from Gordon Biersch (located on 3987 Paradise Road) at 7 p.m on KXNT AM-840 with hosts Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick. The weekly show features interviews with coaches, opposing coaches as well as listener call-ins. Listeners are invited to call in to the show at (702) 733-5968. The next two coaches shows will air on Tuesday, Dec. 29 and Tuesday, Jan. 5.

PROMOTIONS: UNLV hosts Columbia on Sunday, Dec. 27 and Southern Utah on Monday, Dec. 28: 2,500 Runnin' Rebel basketball trading cards will be given out on both nights.

UNLV vs. OKLAHOMA STATE RECAP: No. 25 Oklahoma State defeated UNLV 81-69 on Tuesday, Dec. 22. The game marked UNLV's fourth straight loss and ended a string of three straight games against ranked opponents. UNLV broke out to an early lead of 11-6 on a 3-pointer by senior guard Brian Keefe at 17:02. Oklahoma State then outscored UNLV 23-7 over a 11:23 span to take an 11-point lead of 29-18 (5:39). UNLV then went on its own run and outscored OSU 15-5 to cut the lead to 34-33 at 1:24. A 3-pointer from guard Doug Gottlieb, who finished with a game-high 15 assists, gave the Cowboys a 37-33 halftime lead. The second half was close until the final five minutes. UNLV's biggest lead of the second half was 44-40 (15:26) on a jumper by junior forward Shawn Marion. Oklahoma State took a 5-point lead at 53-48 on a dunk by Adrian Peterson with 7:31 left. UNLV later tied the game at 55-55 on a layup by junior guard Mark Dickel with 5:37 left in the game. OSU then took control of the game and outscored UNLV 14-1 to lead 69-56 with 1:54 to play. Oklahoma State was led by Desmond Mason and Peterson who both scored 21 points. Guard Glendon Alexander added 16. Sophomore center Kaspars Kambala and Marion each recorded double-doubles. Kambala had 18 points and a season-high 13 rebounds and Marion had 18 and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Kevin Simmons added 16. OSU shot .509 (29-for-57) from the field and UNLV shot .444 (24-for-54). OSU shot .450 (9-for-20) from 3-point range and UNLV .313 (5-for-16). OSU shot .636 (14-for-22) from the line and UNLV .727 (16-for-22). UNLV outrebounded OSU 35-34.

COLUMBIA HEAD COACH ARMOND HILL: He is in his 4th season at Columbia and his record is 28-60 (.318) .

SERIES HISTORY: Sunday's game between Columbia and UNLV will mark the first meeting between the two schools. UNLV leads the series against Southern Utah 14-7. UNLV defeated Southern Utah 72-59 on Dec. 23, 1996, at the Thomas & Mack Center. Tyrone Nesby led UNLV with 27 points and 10 rebounds and Keon Clark added 22 and 14 rebounds.

UNLV vs. IVY LEAGUE: UNLV is 2-1 (.667) all-time vs. the Ivy League. UNLV's lone opponent has been Princeton. The last meeting was in last year's NCAA East Regional in Hartford, Conn. The Tigers defeated UNLV, 69-57.

RUNNIN' REBEL HEAD COACH BILL BAYNO: He is in his fourth season as the head coach of the UNLV Runnin' Rebels. He is UNLV's 10th head coach in the 40-year history of Rebel basketball. He has a career record of 56-45 (.554) in four seasons at the helm of Runnin' Rebel basketball. Bayno has recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons (42-23 record over that stretch) and has guided UNLV to postseason play for two straight seasons. UNLV compiled an overall record of 22-10 in 1996-97 in Bayno's second season. UNLV more than doubled its win total from 1995-96 (10-16 record). UNLV advanced to the third round of the NIT. Last season, UNLV compiled an overall record of 20-13. The Runnin' Rebels had a remarkable run winning four games in five days in the WAC Tournament. UNLV posted victories over Hawai'i, Utah, Fresno State and New Mexico to capture the WAC Tournament championship and receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UNLV reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1990-91 season. UNLV faced eighth-ranked Princeton in the NCAA East Regionals in Hartford, Conn. Bayno served seven years as the associate head coach at the University of Massachusetts under John Calipari (now head coach of the NBA's New Jersey Nets). Other coaching experience includes: 1987-88: Assistant Coach, Baptist College (Charleston, SC); 1986-87: Graduate Assistant Coach, University of Kansas; 1985-86: Graduate Assistant Coach, Seton Hall University. Playing experience includes: 1980-82: Massachusetts and 1983-85: Sacred Heart University.

3-POINT GOALS: Since the 3-point field goal was adopted by the NCAA in 1986-87, UNLV has converted at least one 3-pointer in all 399 games played (counting 10 games this season). The Big West Conference experimented with the 3-point shot in the 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. During that period, UNLV connected from 3-point range in 53 of 64 games. The UNLV streak for games in which it sank at least one 3-point shot stands at 412. The last time the Runnin' Rebels failed to make at least one 3-pointer came against Long Beach State on Jan. 25, 1986. NOTE: The other two top schools with consecutive 3-point streaks (as of Dec. 15) are Vanderbilt (392) and Princeton (350).

HOME RECORD: UNLV has compiled a record of 44-16 (.733) under Bill Bayno at the Thomas & Mack Center over four seasons. UNLV is 35-10 (.778) over the last three seasons.

NOTES:
Pres-Season Ranking: The Runnin' Rebels were ranked 25th by Sports Illustrated's 1998 preseason Top 25 (Nov. 23 issue).

100-point Games: The 103 points scored against Sacred Heart in the season opener was the first 100-point game for UNLV since Dec. 30, 1994, at Central Florida. UNLV defeated Central Florida 103-90 in overtime...the last time UNLV scored 100 points at the Thomas & Mack Center was against Nevada, Reno on Feb. 25, 1993. UNLV won 100-93.

60-point half: UNLV recorded 60 points in the first half against Sacred Heart...the last time UNLV scored 60 points in a half was against UC Irvine on Dec. 19, 1992...the Runnin' Rebels scored 60 points in the second half in rout to a 115-97 victory.

Shooting 60 percent: UNLV shot .638 from the field (44-for-69) against Sacred Heart...the last time UNLV shot 60 percent or better in a game was against Air Force .608 (31-for-51) on Feb. 20, 1997 at the T&M.

Victory Margins: The 47-point victory over Sacred Heart marked the largest margin of victory under coach Bill Bayno...the 37-point victory over Troy State (95-58 on Nov. 16) tied the second highest margin of victory...UNLV defeated Chicago State (86-49) on Dec. 17, 1997.

Shooting 3's: UNLV shot 37 attempts from 3-point range against USC on Nov. 20...the 37 attempts is the most since the Runnin' Rebels attempted 46 (21 made) against Nevada, Reno on Dec. 8, 1990 at Reno.

Shooting 50 percent: UNLV has shot .492 (128-for-260) from the field over the last five games: shot .560 (28-for-50) vs. UNR (Dec. 2), .519 (27-for-52) vs. Arizona State (Dec. 5), .489 (24-for-49) vs. UCLA; .455 (25-for-55) vs. Cincinnati; .444 (24-for-54) vs. Oklahoma State...The Runnin' Rebels have shot .500 or better in 4 of 10 games and are 3-1 in those games.

Homestand and Stretch: UNLV is in the midst of playing 7 of 8 at home (which began with the Las Vegas Shootout).

UNLV 0-3 vs. PAC-10: UNLV is 0-3 vs. the PAC-10 this season. The three losses were by a total of 17 points (5.7 average), vs. USC 68-71; ASU 70-79; UCLA 67-72.

Two double-doubles in same game: Kaspars Kambala (18 points and 13 rebounds) and Shawn Marion (18 points and 10 rebounds) recorded double-doubles against No. 25 Oklahoma State on Dec. 22. It marked the first time that two players have recorded double-doubles in the same game since Feb. 5, 1998, at Air Force (Keon Clark 18 points and 11 rebounds and Kevin Simmons 15 points and 11 rebounds).

FIVE GAMES TO BE TELEVISED BY KBLR, TV-39, CABLE 9: UNLV Sports Network announced that for the first time it will offer spanish language broadcasts of Runnin' Rebel basketball. KBLR, TV-39, Cable 9 will televise five road games. Live studio commentary will be provided by Carlos Veliz and Ruben Herrera. The following is the television schedule for the five Saturday games: Jan. 2, 1999 at Cal Poly; Jan. 23 at TCU; Feb. 6 at Air Force; Feb. 13 at Rice; Feb. 27 at Wyoming.

Appeared in 10 games and is averaging 17.3 points (team leader) and 8.2 rebounds (team leader). Shooting .559 (71-for-127) from the field and .765 (26-for-34) from the line. Scored in double figures in all 10 games. Scored 17 points against Sacred Heart on Nov. 14; 18 points and 7 rebounds against Troy State on Nov. 16. Compiled the team's first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds against USC on Nov. 20. Scored 14 points (7-for-12 FG) and pulled down 9 rebounds and had 5 blocked shots in 30 minutes against Weber State on Nov. 24.
