UNLV Runnin' Rebels Conclude Homestand Against Weber State Tuesday

November 23, 1998

LAS VEGAS, NEV: The UNLV Runnin' Rebels will conclude their four-game homestand against Weber State on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 7:35 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center (18,500). UNLV then will travel to Springfield, Mass, to face No. 8 Kansas in the Hall of Fame Tip-off Classic on Friday, Nov. 27, at 4:35 p.m. (PST) at the Springfield Civic Center.

NOTE: The Runnin' Rebels are ranked 25th by Sports Illustrated's 1998 preseason Top 25.

All Runnin' Rebel games will be carried live on KXNT AM-840. Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick will call the action all season long. The pregame show for Tuesday's game will begin at 7 p.m. Fans can bring their radio to the game and tune in to KXNT's radio broadcast inside the Thomas & Mack Center on 99.5 FM. Runnin' Rebel basketball can be heard on www.broadcast.com

TELEVISION: Tuesday's game will not be televised. Friday's game between UNLV and Kansas will be televised on ESPN. Dave Sims and Larry Conley will call the action.

RADIO/TV SHOW INFO: "Game Time with UNLV Hoops" television show will be shown every Sunday on KLAS TV-8 at 5:30 p.m. (begins Nov. 29). The show, with Head Coach Bill Bayno and host Chris Maathuis, features previews of upcoming opponents and highlights of previous games.

"The Bill Bayno Radio Show" can be heard live every Tuesday from Gordon Biersch (located on 3987 Paradise Road) at 7 p.m on KXNT AM-840 with hosts Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick. The weekly show features interviews with coaches, opposing coaches as well as listener call-ins. Listeners are invited to call in to the show at (702) 733-5968. First coaches show will be on Monday, Nov. 30.

TRAVEL ITINERARY: UNLV will depart for Springfield, Mass, after Tuesday's game against Weber State. The team will stay at the Springfield Marriott (413) 781-7111. UNLV will return to Las Vegas on Saturday, Nov. 28, arriving on America West at 4:51 p.m.

UNLV VS. USC RECAP: The Trojans defeated UNLV 71-68 on Friday, Nov. 20, at the Thomas & Mack Center. USC, which never trailed in the game, raced out to a 17-2 in the first 4:57. USC's biggest lead of the game was 18 points at 24-6 with 11:15 left in the first half. UNLV rallied and went on a 20-12 run to trail 36-26 at the half. UNLV cut the deficit to two points at 42-40 on two free throws by senior guard Brian Keefe with 13:30 to play. However, UNLV could not get any closer as USC handed the Runnin' Rebels their first loss of the season. The Trojans, leading 51-47, scored six straight to take a 57-47 advantage with 3:37 left. UNLV, trailing 71-61, scored the final seven points of the game. Guard Elias Ayuso led USC with 16 points and guard Brandon Granville and center Brian Scalabrine added 15. Keefe led UNLV with a season-high 15 points and junior forward Shawn Marion recorded UNLV's first double-double of the season with 14 points (all in the second half) and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Kevin Simmons, junior guard Mark Dickel and sophomore guard Greedy Daniels each scored 11. USC shot .510 (25-for-49) from the field, .467 from 3-point range (7-for-15) and .583 from the line (14-for-24). UNLV shot .324 (23-for-71) from the field; .216 from 3-point range (8-for-37) and .737 from the line (14-for-19). UNLV outrebounded USC 40-39 before a season-high crowd of 16,348.

REBEL BASKETBALL LUNCHEONS: The Rebel basketball luncheons featuring Bill Bayno will be held four times this season at noon at the Si Redd Room in the Thomas & Mack Center. Admittance is free to working media.

WEBER STATE: The Wildcats are 2-0 on the season. They defeated Southern Utah, 81-75 on Nov. 13 and BYU, 83-80 on Nov. 19. Weber State compiled an overall record of 14-13 last season and 12-4 (2nd) in the Big Sky Conference.

WEBER STATE HEAD COACH RON ABEGGLEN: He is in his eighth season at Weber State and his record is 129-75 (.632) and career record over 13 seasons is 238-120 (.665).

SERIES HISTORY: Weber State leads the series against UNLV 2-0. Weber State defeated UNLV 76-47 in the 1959-60 season and 79-78 on Dec. 29, 1979 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

RUNNIN' REBEL HEAD COACH BILL BAYNO: He is in his fourth season as the head coach of the UNLV Runnin' Rebels. He is UNLV's 10th head coach in the 40-year history of Rebel basketball. He has a career record of 54-40 (.574) in three seasons at the helm of Runnin' Rebel basketball. Bayno has recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons (42-23 record over that stretch) and has guided UNLV to postseason play for two straight seasons. UNLV compiled an overall record of 22-10 in 1996-97 in Bayno's second season. UNLV more than doubled its win total from 1995-96 (10-16 record). UNLV advanced to the third round of the NIT. Last season, UNLV compiled an overall record of 20-13. The Runnin' Rebels had a remarkable run winning four games in five days in the WAC Tournament. UNLV posted victories over Hawai'i, Utah, Fresno State and New Mexico to capture the WAC Tournament championship and receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UNLV reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1990-91 season. UNLV faced eighth-ranked Princeton in the NCAA East Regionals in Hartford, Conn. Bayno served seven years as the associate head coach at the University of Massachusetts under John Calipari (now head coach of the NBA's New Jersey Nets). Other coaching experience includes: 1987-88: Assistant Coach, Baptist College (Charleston, SC); 1986-87: Graduate Assistant Coach, University of Kansas; 1985-86: Graduate Assistant Coach, Seton Hall University. Playing experience includes: 1980-82: Massachusetts and 1983-85: Sacred Heart University.

3-POINT GOALS: Since the 3-point field goal was adopted by the NCAA in 1986-87, UNLV has converted at least one 3-pointer in all 392 games played (counting 3 games this season). The Big West Conference experimented with the 3-point shot in the 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. During that period, UNLV connected from 3-point range in 53 of 64 games. The UNLV streak for games in which it sank at least one 3-point shot stands at 405. The last time the Runnin' Rebels failed to make at least one 3-pointer came against Long Beach State on Jan. 25, 1986.

KANSAS: The Jayhawks are 3-0 on the season. They defeated Gonzaga (Nov. 13) 80-66, Pennsylvania (Nov. 17) 61-56 and Fort Hays St. (Nov. 21) 91-67. Kansas compiled an overall record of 35-4 last season and 15-1(1st) in the Big 12 Conference.

SERIES HISTORY: Kansas leads the series against UNLV 2-0. Kansas defeated UNLV 91-77 on Nov. 22, 1989, in the NIT Final Four at Madison Square Garden. Last season (Nov. 21, 1997), Kansas defeated UNLV 92-68 in the preseason NIT at Allen Fieldhouse. Paul Pierce led Kansas with 19 points and Billy Thomas added 17. UNLV was led by Tyrone Nesby's game high 23 points. Kaspars Kambala added 19 and Donovan Stewart had 15. Kansas led 48-32 at halftime before a crowd of 15,701 in Lawrence, Kan.

KANSAS HEAD COACH ROY WILLIAMS: He is in his 11th season at Kansas and his record is 285-62 (.821). Williams is the winningest active division I coach by percentage (ahead of Jerry Tarkanian's .813).

MARK DICKEL: Has appeared in 3 games and is averaging 7.0 points and 8.0 assists. Dished out a season-high 10 assists in the season opener against Sacred Heart on Nov. 14. It marked the fifth time in his career that he recorded 10 or more assists in a game. Scored a season-high 11 points and had a career-high 10 3-pointers attempted (1 made) against USC on Nov. 20.
