Men's Soccer Outshoots Detroit

Sept. 10, 1999

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men?s soccer team outshot the University of Detroit Mercy 9-5 to win its UNLV Snickers/FILA Classic first-round match, 4-3.

The Rebels jumped out to an early lead just 8:33 into the match when freshman Tuomas Talvio (Helsinki, Finland) finally connected on a breakaway for his first goal of the year.

Just minutes after setting up Talvio for the first goal, sophomore Jason Melendez (Lakewood, CA/Mayfair) put the Rebels on top 2-0 with an unassisted return at the 11:26 mark. Melendez has two goals and two assists on the season and leads UNLV in scoring for the second straight year.

Detroit?s Marcel Flemming raced through the defense twice in the first half to record his fourth and fifth goals of the year, but not before UNLV freshman Paul Dickinson (Brisbane, Australia) netted the Rebels? third goal of the evening. UNLV clung to a 3-2 lead at the break.

After a lengthy battle, senior defender Geoff Barto (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley) began with a pass to Melendez, who redirected to Talvio, who crossed the ball in front of the goal for Barto to register an easy tap in and the game-winner.

Detroit falls to 1-3-0 while the Rebels improve to 2-2-0 on the year and will face #16 Washington at Johann Field on Sunday at 12:00 noon.

#7 SMU 1, #16 Washington 0

SMU goalkeeper Byron Foss had three saves and shut out #16 Washington Friday night to lead the Mustangs to a first round win in the UNLV Snickers/FILA Rebel Classic, 1-0.

An even battle through most of the match, SMU finally beat the Washington defense in the 79th minute when Luis Gonzales scored from right in front of the box. Carl Bussey and Bret Corbin each recorded assists on the goal.

SMU (2-0-0) will play Detroit in the 2:00 p.m. match Sunday.
