Men's Soccer Edged By Washington

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men?s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to #16 Washington Sunday at Johann Field in their final match of the 1999 UNLV Snickers/FILA Rebel Classic.

The Rebels played well, but were unable to contain the Huskies? Dayo Oyetuga, who scored both UW goals. Washington took an early lead when Oyetuga one-timed Zac Tallman?s pass into the net at 4:39.

Oyetuga added the game winner at 23:03, heading in a beautiful cross pass from Kyle Fukuchi. His performance earned him honors as the tournament?s Best Offensive Player.

UNLV responded with a goal in the second half as Brent Storrs? (San Diego, CA/San Dieguito) header redirected Matt Thompson?s (Mustang, OK/Mustang) free kick in the 63rd minute.

The Rebels drop to 2-3-0 on the season and will complete their six-match home stand in next week?s Coors Soccer Classic. Washington is 2-1-1.

#7 SMU 9, Detroit 0

SMU?s Luchi Gonzales scored three goals and added two assists as the seventh-ranked Mustangs topped Detroit in a 9-0 rout.

Gonzales, who also scored the only goal in the Mustangs? 1-0 victory over Washington Friday night, was named the tournament?s Most Valuable Player. SMU goalkeeper Byron Foss earned Best Defensive Player kudos after shutting out both opponents he faced.

SMU improves to 3-0-0 on the season while Detroit falls to 1-3-0.
