ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The UNLV men's soccer team defeated Alabama A&M in the championship match of the UNM Invitational on Sunday, shutting out the Panthers 2-0. With the victory, the Rebels improve to 8-5-1 on the season, tallying the most victories in a season since 1992.
The Rebels scored the game winner at the 27:37 mark off a breakaway by sophomore Tuomas Talvio scoring his career-tying fifth goal of the season. The match remained 1-0 throughout the rest of the first half.
Alabama A&M (6-6-1) lost two players midway through the second half to automatic red cards, forcing the Panthers to play two men down the rest of the way. Rebel senior Matt Thompson scored the insurance goal at the 77:00 mark with the assist going to junior Tyler Turchi for the 2-0 lead.
The Rebels continue on the road next week, traveling to Cal State Fullerton on October 22 and then at UC Irvine on October 27. The Rebels will return home on Sunday, November 5 for the season finally against the Lobos of New Mexico.
