IRVINE, Calif. - UNLV freshman Agnieszkia Abram won two more times Saturday to move into the semifinals of the 2000 ITA Women's Tennis Regional Championships, which are being played on the campus of UC Irvine.
Abram, of Warsaw, Poland, downed two ranked players from Arizona State to advance. She first defeated 48th-ranked Faye DeVera, 6-3, 6-1, and then won a third-set tiebreaker in the quarterfinals to get past 84th-ranked Mhairi Brown 4-6, 6-0, 7-6.
"Agnieszka demonstrated today that she is capable of playing with the premier players in college tennis," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "I'm very proud of what she has already accomplished at this tournament and I think we can expect some great things in the future."
Abram will take on 63rd-ranked Michelle Gough of Arizona in the semifinals. The finals are set for Sunday and both semifinalists will earn an automatic bid to the ITA nationals this spring.
Abram and partner Amy Hadziosmanovic were eliminated in doubles play, losing 8-3 to 23rd-ranked Tiffany Brymer and Jewel Peterson of USC.
