LAS VEGAS - The Division I Committee on Infractions has made a finding of a violation of NCAA ethical conduct against men's basketball student-athlete Chris Richardson in association with UNLV's infractions case. The University has already begun the process of an appeal for the restoration of the student-athlete's eligibility.
The decision to announce the results of the Richardson portion of the case was prompted by the beginning of the regular men's basketball season Friday, November 17, 2000. It is anticipated that the eligibility appeal process will take about four weeks.
In a letter written to UNLV by Jack Friedenthal, chair of the Division I Committee on Infractions, it stated: "Normally, the committee does not release any of the findings in an infractions case until the completion of the infractions report. However, in light of the rapidly approaching basketball season, the committee felt it appropriate to make an exception in this case so that the student-athlete reinstatement process can be started for Mr. Richardson."
There was no indication when the entire Infractions Report would be issued. UNLV appeared before the Committee on Infractions on September 22, 2000, in Dallas and it was anticipated that the report would be mailed to the university in six to eight weeks.
UNLV Director of Athletics Charles Cavagnaro said, "It is certainly unusual for an infractions case to be handled in this manner, but we appreciate the concern for the student-athlete's eligibility and the fact the season is upon us."
As a result of the decision, Richardson will not be eligible for participation until his case is resolved.
