UNLV Appealing NCAA Postseason Ban

Dec. 15, 2000

LAS VEGAS - UNLV will appeal the recent NCAA penalty banning postseason play this season to the NCAA Infractions Appeal Committee, the athletics department announced Friday.

The university is not appealing the NCAA Committee on Infractions' findings, rather it is appealing only the penalty concerning postseason participation.

"Our current student-athletes had no involvement in the recruiting violations that occurred with the student-athlete in question," UNLV Director of Athletics Charles Cavagnaro said. "In addition, after our review of the infractions report, we feel that the lack of consideration of the fact that we received no competitive advantage over the recruitment of the student-athlete warrants an appeal.

"Since we withdrew the scholarship from the individual prior to his full-time enrollment at this university, we received no competitive advantage."

The university has 30 days to issue its appeal.
