New Mexico Defeats UNLV Baseball 10-1 In Series Opener

LAS VEGAS - New Mexico defeated UNLV 10-1 on Friday evening in Mountain West Conference action at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Lobos improved to 16-12 overall and 5-1 in the MWC and UNLV dropped to 7-22 overall and 0-7 in MWC play.

Junior left-hander Chris Cooper hurled a complete-game for the Lobos to improve to 5-1. He allowed 7 hits, 1 run, walked 2 and struck out 9 on 125 pitches.

UNLV scored its lone run of the game in the first inning. Senior second baseman Cody Okuda singled to center field with one out and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Senior first baseman Tony DeMarco then lined a single to center field to score Okuda.

New Mexico later scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning off of starter and loser Giovanni Pupo. The freshman left-hander, 0-6, pitched 3.1 innings, allowed 4 hits, 6 runs (3 earned). The key hits in the inning were a two-run triple by rightfielder Donny Sevieri and a two-run single by first baseman Dee Dennis off of reliever C.J. Martin. Dennis was 4-for-5 with 3 RBI.

Freshman right-hander Donnie Watts had a strong relief outing for UNLV. He pitched 5 innings, allowed 7 hits, 3 runs and struck out 6.

The three-game series will continue on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. at Wilson Stadium. The game will be broadcast on KSHP AM-1400 with Scott Robbs calling the action.
