Track and Field Wins At Home

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's track and field team won six events Saturday to complete a come-from-behind victory in the UNLV Track and Field Invitational at Myron Partridge Stadium.

The Rebels scored 171 points and held on to win despite a strong effort by Idaho, who scored 165.

Sophomore sprinter Michele Davis captured both the 200 and 400 meters in NCAA provisional qualifying times. She clocked 23.48 in the 200 and 53.12 in the 400.

Junior distance runner Katie Barto led the morning off with a victory in the 5,000 meters, winning the race be 30 seconds with a time of 17:36.65, and the 400-meter relay team followed shortly with a victory in 45.24.

Senior Ayanna Hutchinson scored big for the Rebels, capturing the 100 meters (11.45) and finishing second in the 200 (23.71).

UNLV also won the long jump behind Heather Steadham's personal best leap of 18-10.75. Steadham also scored team points in the javelin, finishing second with a mark of 121-10, the 100-meter hurdles, finishing fourth in 15.16, and the high jump, notching an eighth-place finish after clearing 5-1.

Junior pole vaulter Charlotte McGee again broke her school record, clearing a personal best 11-0 to finish second.

Also capturing second-place finishes for UNLV were Tianika Sharrieff, who moved into fourth on UNLV's all-time high jump list with a mark of 5-7, and Chantel Yates, who ran the 100-meter hurdles in 14.40.

Kathryn Goetz, Stephanie Davidson and Paula Lechner each scored in the distance events. Davidson finished third in the 1,500 meters (4:40.04) while Goetz and Lechner both ran the 800 meters. Goetz took fourth overall, clocking 2:16.91, and Lechner finished in sixth in 2:18.24.

Southern Utah won the men's competition with 157.5 points, topping Western State College (119.5) and BYU (75).

The Rebels will continue their training for the outdoor season next week, competing at the Mt. SAC relays in Walnut, Calif.
