Softball's Ainslie Earns Academic Award

LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior Charelle Ainslie has been named to the 2000 GTE Academic All-District VIII Softball Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.

Ainslie, a first baseman from Melbourne, Australia, boasts a career grade point average of 3.84 - the second-highest among all first-team selections. She currently is batting .278 with three home runs and 20 runs batted in.

In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA, must be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season at the school.

UNLV's district consists of schools from the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The national winners, which also will be voted on by members of CoSIDA, will be announced on June 8.
