LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's soccer opened the 2000 season with a 3-0 victory over Ohio State in both schools openers. This was the first of two games this weekend for the Rebels, as they host the UNLV FILA/Snickers Rebel Classic.
Ohio State dominated the early moments of the first half until the Rebels' forward, Jason Melendez, put a ball past the Buckeye goalie, Kerry Thompson, with an assist going to sophomore, Tuomas Talvio, The game remained 1-0 through the rest of the half.
The Rebels (1-0) found the net once again at the 59:34 mark in the second half. Sophomore Ryan Cariss scored on a cross pass from freshman Alejandro Hernandez and junior Tyler Turchi to up the score to 2-0. Late in the second half, the Rebels hit pay-dirt once again, with a setup shot by junior Andrew Hooker to Talvio for the score off a rebound by the Buckeyes' keeper. Rebels' senior goalie Robert Ackah finished the game with five saves to preserve his first career shutout.
The Rebels will be in action on Sunday in the final round of the UNLV FILA/Snickers Classic facing Notre Dame at 12:00 p.m. Notre Dame defeated New Mexico in the nightcap 2-0.
